PLOT:
Door-to-door cosmetics sales lady Fran Fine inadvertently becomes the nanny to the three children of a widowed Broadway producer.

season 1 -
As a result of Brighton getting caught smoking, Fran takes him to see her grandma Yetta who has been smoking all her life. Fran hosts a tea party for Maggie's friends, however Maxwell wonders if Fran has the class to pull it off. When Fran acts as a chaperon on Maggie's date, Maggie's boyfriend shows an interest in Fran. C.C.'s attempts to get closer to Maxwell's children results in Gracie running away. When status-conscious relatives visit from Florida, Fran pretends that Niles is Maxwell and they are married. Gracie is traumatized when Fran "eats" her imaginary friend. Much to his children's disappointment as well as Fran's, Maxwell has to be in Washington, D.C. on Christmas day. Meanwhile, Fran has overextended herself in buying gifts. Maxwell wants to hire popular soap star Brock Storm for his latest show, but he'll only do it if he gets a date with Fran. Maxwell's old nanny comes to visit and is unimpressed with Fran's unconventional ways and lack of formal training. Sylvia buys Fran a cemetery plot to get her closer to the cemetery manager. Fran agrees to direct Grace's school play, but then Maxwell maneuvers his way into her position. A world-renowned model thinks Maggie would make a good fashion model. When the water goes out in the house, Maxwell reluctantly agrees to let Fran hire her uncle as a plumber. Meanwhile, Maggie wants to go to a party, but when her father learns there will be boys there he forbids it. When all the children get sick, Fran takes Grace to the doctor and learns she needs a tonsillectomy. A blizzard paralyzes the city and forces Fran and the Sheffields to move their Bermuda vacation to her mother's apartment in Queens. Maxwell's sister comes to visit and she decides then to marry her intended. A play-date between Gracie and the child of a Broadway critic does not go well. Fran learns that her old, tyrannical gym teacher is now Maggie's gym teacher. C.C.'s father comes to visit. When C.C. turns down his offer to see Barbra Streisand in concert, Fran, who adores all things Streisand, gets the opportunity. Fran must decide between the Sheffields and her old boy friend that proposes. Mother's Day is approaching and, as usual, Maxwell is trying to preoccupy the children so that they won't think about their mother, Sara. But Fran thinks talking to the kids about their mother. This year, Maxwell and the family have joined a new country club. Scoping it out, Maxwell, Fran, and Grace learn that it's having Mother's-Day festivities, including a mother-daughter pageant. Grace wants to enter it with Fran, which Maxwell doesn't think is a good idea, believing that she'll ultimately grieve Sara's loss again, but he gives in to her wish. Then, on Mother's Day, one of the competing mother-daughter teams (ultra-competitive Bobbi Jo and Betty Jo), deems Fran and Grace ineligible for the pageant since Fran isn't Grace's mother, and Grace storms out stating she has no mother. Later, Grace admits her anger is not grief and missing her deceased mother, but anger at herself for not remembering anything about her mother. Maxwell realizes he has been approaching Sara's death all wrong, especially with Grace. Back at the country club, Fran and Grace complete the pageant with a duet as their talent, placing them first runner-up, not behind Bobbi Jo and Betty Jo, but behind Patti LaBelle and her daughter.

season 2 -
Maxwell dates a woman with a striking resemblance to Fran. A man whom Fran snubbed in high school has written a play and threatens to jump off a ledge unless Maxwell reads it. Grandma Yetta stays with Fran and the Sheffields while her retirement home is being fumigated. Fran goes out with a much older rich man. Gracie's Red Robin troop goes to Grandma Yetta's retirement home to "adopt" a grandparent. When Gracie's first and second picks pass away, it sours her on scouting. On the subway, a Russian immigrant accidentally leaves her baby, and Fran picks it up, believing it to be abandoned. A director plans to sabotage his production of "Romeo and Juliet" by casting Fran in the lead role. Maxwell has Fran pretend to be C.C. in order to get theatrical backing from a man C.C. attacked to get a cab. Fran gives Maxwell a stock tip that turns out to be from a hot dog vendor. During Sylvia's 50th birthday party, Fran gets stuck in the wine cellar with C.C. Fran inadvertently persuades an obnoxious child star set to star in Maxwell's revival of "Oliver!" to give up show business. Maggie is upset when Fran inherits a mink coat. Fran decides to give it up to appease Maggie, but Sylvia won't hear of it. Maxwell and Fran face a difference in opinion on how to raise the children when Maxwell reverses a decision Fran made regarding not allowing Brighton to go to the mall. Fran makes Maxwell realize that Brighton was using the old ploy of dividing and conquering. Another difference they face is during the party following the opening on Maxwell and C.C.'s new play, a musical version of Norma Rae (1979). The busboys at the hotel where the reception is being held are on strike. Fran refuses to cross the picket line, which makes Maxwell try to forcibly make her cross. The media has a field day with the issue, especially considering the irony with regard to the subject matter of Norma Rae. Maxwell and C.C. decide to diffuse the issue by presenting their side of the story on Sally Jessy Raphael's talk show. But Sally's show offers Fran a counterpoint argument. Realistically, this forum allows both Fran and Maxwell to discuss deeper feelings around the issue. Maxwell refuses to divulge the identity of the celebrity recuperating from surgery in the Sheffields' house. Fran receives a surprise when Sylvia sends in a long-lost "Win a Date With Erik Estrada" contest entry form. After Brighton joins Sylvia's canasta team, Fran is dumped from it. Maxwell draws up a will which states that Fran will remain nanny in the event of his death. Meanwhile, she thinks that a fax of a potential client's heart-sensitive diet given to Niles is really for Maxwell. Fran sets Grandma Yetta up with Dakota Williams, a hard-drinking Southern playwright from whom Maxwell hopes to buy his latest play. Fran strikes up a friendship with a male nanny whom she erroneously assumes is gay. Meanwhile, Gracie believes she's pregnant. C.C. plans to move into feature film production with a star vehicle for Shari Lewis and Lamb Chop. When Shari and Lamb Chop visit the Sheffield mansion, C.C.'s dog Chester tries to eat Lamb Chop. Maggie is a candy striper at the hospital. When she takes off to go on a date, Fran fills in for her and must shave Maxwell for an appendectomy. Maxwell hears Niles singing and asks him to sing for his backers' audition. Meanwhile, Fran clashes with her sister Nadine. Maggie is upset when Fran beats her in a kissing contest. The winner is to appear on an album cover with Billy Ray Cyrus. Fran worries about her future when Mona, one of her fellow nannies, retires to Florida. The night of Mona's goodbye party, Fran gets drunk and staggers into Maxwell's bed. Fran takes Maggie to her favorite beauty salon to prepare for a party; while there she arranges a job there for an actress who loses a Sheffield audition. An valuable Shakespearian document is taken from Fran when she is mugged in New York's Central Park.

season 3 -
Mr. Sheffield pushes Fran to accept a date from her long time pen-pal whom she has never met. C.C. makes a bet with her brother than he can't get Fran on Jeopardy. Fran gets on and wins and gets Renaissance Fair tickets from their new next door neighbor Roger Clinton when Maxwell can't. Going out with the man who asks Fran to marry him, he steals the engagement ring that they were looking at. Instead of a boring 16th birthday for Maggie, Fran has it at her Aunt Freida's bar and the kids have a wonderful time. Fran and Val take a small apartment together when Fran feels that her job is taking over her personal life. Even though Mr. Sheffield supports her, he really wants her to move back. The marriage of her former intended (who threw her out in one of those crushing scenes) turns Fran into a shopaholic. Only a kiss from Mr. Sheffield snaps her out of it. When Maxwell hires a female publicist to changes his image, C.C. and Fran think that he is falling for her. Actually the woman is gay and is more interested in Fran. While Maxwell is in Boston, Fran throws a singles party and gets arrested. When Maxwell's mother wants him to get rid of Fran, he proposes to her and she makes him feel very guilty for using her. Fran wants to have a baby, husband or not. Brighton faints while filming Fran's cousin's bris and Fran sends it to Hollywood. Everybody visits Hollywood and Fran keeps getting thrown off the set of Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman (1993). Fran inadvertently talks Maggie into going to a kibbutz in Israel for the Christmas vacation instead of a convent. Fran is very happy with her new Italian boyfriend until she finds out that he has underworld connections and is now afraid to break up with him. When Mr. Sheffield rushes Fran out the door to a premier before she can get a matching handbag, she ends up on a magazine's fashion mistake list. When Fran gets Mr. Sheffield to teach her a lesson about smoking for Maggie's sake, he pushes Fran right out the door to the Clinton residence. When her mother throws her father out of the house, Fran seeks advice from her grandmothers. She also thinks that Mr. Sheffield needs a change in his life. Val's new boyfriend starts to move in on Fran. Thinking Mr. Sheffield wants her to be her valentine, she puts up a billboard in Times Square. Fran is going crazy because her foot model reunion is coming up and her feet went up an entire shoe size. Fran loses Elizabeth Taylor's string of black pearls. Fran dates a very superstitious NY Ranger who claims that her red shoes jinxed the team and caused them to lose. After a much heard comment, the entire City of New York thinks that she is a jinx. After Fran beats him in tennis, Maxwell is feeling old and goes out and buys a younger image and a sports car. Fran suggests that her cantor boyfriend should audition for Maxwell's next show. Brighton's handsome French tutor proposes to Fran who finds out he is flirting with other women and needs a green card. Fran decides to take a cruise to meet guys and Mr. Sheffield and family join her. Fran runs onto Mr. Sheffield's plane with his bag and ends up having to go to Paris with him. On the flight back as the plane is plummeting down he tells Fran that he loves her.

season 4 -
Upon returning home from Paris, Fran couldn't be happier when C.C. says Maxwell just hired her for her looks. To find out if this is true, Fran tries dating a blind guy. Meanwhile Maxwell tries to back-peddle after what he told Fran on the plane. After Maxwell tells Fran to make Maggie break up with a 25 year old, Fran starts dating his same age friend. Despite Mr. Sheffield's objections Fran helps Brighton with his science project. He plans on hatching some bird eggs, but Fran waits too long and hard boils them. After getting picked from the audience for the Rosie Show, Fran finds herself a regular, giving parenting advice. As her celebrity grows, Maxwell becomes afraid he's going to lose her. With Aunt Freida broke, she moves into the Sheffield mansion. Fran's solution is to get her boyfriend to propose, but instead he has a heart attack. Fran tries to have Maxwell and his father make peace by inviting the secretary that broke up his parent's marriage to dinner. Fran is watching Jay Leno's dog and getting audited by the Internal Revenue Service. With Maxwell busy it's up to Fran to show his brother Nigel around New York. Nigel is enchanted and proposes to Fran. While lecturing Maggie about not getting a tattoo, Val lets it slip that she and Fran got one when they were teenagers. Now Mr. Sheffield is dying to know where it is. Mr. Sheffield won't get Maggie a car, so she convinces Fran to enter a beauty contest to win her one. When Fran takes a vacation with Val to get away from her job and the kids, a hurricane hits their tropical paradise. Fran attends the funeral of her former intended and wonders if she is going to be left alone in the world. Fran can't believe her luck when she meets a rich Jewish doctor at a wedding, and they begin dating; that is, until Fran's mother meets him. Fran, Val and C.C. all go out together and Fran is the only one who doesn't find a date. Fran gets very upset with Maxwell when she finds him making out in the living room with his date. Fran is told by her therapist that she is treating him like her husband rather than her boss. While at a bank, Fran and her mother becomes hostages to a very inept bank robber. Fran starts to become very good friends with the gentleman. Fran and C.C. sit on a jury of a case that mirrors Fran's life. Fran thinks that Niles is plotting a murder when she finds a piece of paper he wrote with incriminating words. When she gives it back to him, he harshly questions her and threatens her if she read it. A woman shows up claiming to be Fran's mother due to a mix-up at the hospital. A tabloid publishes a story that Fran and Maxwell have been having an affair since before his wife died. Fran is more upset that that fact means she is over 40, which she isn't. Maxwell hires Fran's old classmate for his latest production and Maggie wants to be her personal assistant. The Sheffields join the Fines for Passover. Fran will do anything to get her song lyrics to a new rock star. They bond, but she finds that Val is a better muse. Fran is involved with a charity auction hosted by Maxwell and Bette Midler. Fran takes a child prodigy to Yetta's nursing home and the death of a resident so traumatizes the child that he swears he will never play the piano again. The woman who stole Fran's job and fiance now has a job on "The Young and the Restless." Fran steals that job from her and she takes Fran's nanny job instead. When Fran takes Sylvia to Boca to look at her condo all they find is a swamp. Fran follows Maxwell to London and after a wonderful afternoon they almost commit to each other until they learn that Niles has had a heart attack. C.C. realizes that she doesn't hate Niles as much as she appears to.

season 5 -
To give him more time, Maxwell gives Fran the job to redecorate the kitchen. On their first date Fran must hide from Elton John because of a previous run-in with him. When Maxwell's old partner Bobbi Flekman starts moving in on him, Fran's friends suggest that Maxwell only likes her because she looks like Fran, and she even tells Fran not to talk so much because her voice is so annoying. After Chester is kidnapped while under Fran's care, she and Val try to find him and end up kidnapped themselves. C.C. and Fran visit Dr. Joyce Brothers to decide who is the better woman for Maxwell. When a Cambodian woman that Fran and Val sponsored as a child visits New York and comes between the two friends, Fran fears she'll come between her and Maxwell too. To stay in the family Frans comes up with a plan to get engaged to Brighton. With Yetta's wedding approaching Fran looks for a new job and gets an audition for a job on television. Fran visits Maggie's school and gets into a relationship with her Jewish philosophy teacher. Fran takes Mr. Sheffield to the Fine Family Reunion at Niagara Falls to give both her and Niles the weekend off. Maxwell proposes and then hits his head. Fran has a romantic date with Maxwell just as she breaks out and swells up due to an allergic reaction to her mother's squash pasta. Fran has a run-in with actress Margo Lange, who is starring in one of Maxwell's plays, when she discovers that her famous mole is a fake. Fran's father will not use the basketball tickets that come from Mr. Sheffield. Fran questions her relationships with men and Maxwell agrees to call her Fran. Grace's pen pal, Billy, is the son of the Sultan of Koorestan, a country in the Middle East. Billy has invited Grace for a visit. Despite the fact that Fran would prefer Niles take Grace since Fran could therefore spend time alone with Maxwell, Maxwell talks Fran into escorting Grace alone on this trip. Hence, Maxwell and Fran part company for the time being with an argument hanging between them. With Fran gone, Maxwell is miserable and frustrated about their argument. In Koorestan, Fran initially is homesick despite the fact that the Sultan bears a striking resemblance to a certain Broadway producer. But she begins to love the place. In return, the Sultan seems to love Fran as he asks her to stay forever. Fran politely declines, but the Sultan seems to take whatever measures he deems necessary for Fran to stay. Maxwell decides to head off to Koorestan to see Fran. Upon his arrival, the Sultan denies Fran's suspicions. But there is no denying what Maxwell has to say to Fran. Maxwell is ready to propose to Fran and thanks to Niles everyone already knows it. At the big announcement dinner everyone is there except Maxwell. Maxwell and Fran go shopping for engagement rings while Fran starts to feel that she isn't good enough for Maxwell's friends and lifestyle. When Fran hires a gift wrapper instead of a singer rapper, she has to turn him into a singing sensation. Fran goes to her high school reunion and finds all of her friends getting divorced while she is engaged. Maxwell's father dies, leaving his entire estate to a secret love-child, Concepcion. Maxwell asks stunned Fran to sign a prenuptial agreement. Maxwell's brother and best man Nigel arrives to throw him a bachelor party.
