PLOT:
Jessica "Jess" Day comes home to find her partner cheating on her with another woman. Heartbroken over it, she splits up with him and moves into a loft apartment with three young single men, Schmidt, Nick and Coach - whom she meets though an Internet ad. The guys try their best to get her out of the apartment and back into the dating life with the help of Jess's best friend Cece. They end up with more than they expect when they find themselves truly caring for her as a friend.

season 1 -
Jess breaks the television in the living room by accidentally throwing a basketball at it. Nick and Schmidt try to convince Jess to retrieve her TV (to replace the one she broke) and personal belongings from the house she had shared with her now ex-partner, which she and her friends do. After Coach leaves, the original third roommate Winston returns and attempts to manipulate Schmidt into switching rooms since Schmidt now occupies Winston's original, larger bedroom. Nick is worried that he will run into Caroline, his ex-girlfriend, at a mutual friend's wedding the guys are invited to. He asks Jess to be his date and pretend to be his girlfriend. At the wedding, Winston takes his job as usher far too seriously. Schmidt attempts to woo Brooke, a former crush. He also catches the eye of his sexually abusive "frenemy," Gretchen - whom he goes to bed with. Jess walks in on Nick in his bedroom, not realizing that he would be naked. She laughs, then leaves the room. This ruins his self-confidence with Amanda, a new co-worker with whom he is intending to have casual sex. Amanda takes Nick to her apartment, where he is too uncomfortable and distracted to take his clothes off because of Jess' earlier intrusion and Amanda having a photo of Barack Obama on her bedroom wall. Cece suggests to Jess that Nick seeing Jess nude would solve the problem by leveling the situation. Jess is in Nick's room, wearing only a towel, intending to show him her naked body in order to level things. When Nick brings Amanda to his bedroom, Jess hides. Nick sees Jess trying to crawl out of the room unnoticed while he and Amanda are undressing. All three are horrified, and Jess hurriedly leaves – her towel accidentally falling to the floor as she does so. Amanda leaves, having been scared off. Schmidt feels deprived due to not having seen Nick's genitals, and repeatedly makes failed attempts to see them. To ace a job interview, Winston tries to brush up on pop culture of the past two years. Schmidt informs him that the country is broke; that Betty White is back, but all the other Golden Girls are dead. Winston watches The King's Speech, The Human Centipede, Precious and David After Dentist. Jess and Cece go to a nightclub, then go back to the apartment together. Cece convinces Jess that Nick may be sexually attracted to her. Schmidt tries to have casual sex with Cece. She gets into his bed with him, but they merely talk and hold hands. He phones Winston, telling him of his 'success'. Winston replies by telling him that does not count as 'closing'. Jess invites Paul, a teacher at her school on whom she has a crush, for Thanksgiving dinner at the apartment. Everyone there warms to Paul, except for Nick. Cece becomes attracted to Schmidt while he is cooking the dinner. Jess has bought the frozen turkey too late, and tries various methods of thawing it. While warming it in the tumble dryer, the turkey catches fire. Jess takes the group into the apartment of her neighbor, Mrs. Beverly, whom she believes is visiting her sister. Paul finds Mrs. Beverly dead on her toilet. The group go to a Black Friday sale. Jess brings her handbell team to the apartment. It consists of delinquent students from her school who are doing it as an alternative to detention. Winston joins in and is very good at it. Nick and Schmidt argue over money and Nick frequently bodging things in the apartment instead of fixing them. In Jess' bedroom, she and Paul undress to have sex, but she decides against it. She thinks she will not be good at sex after being monogamous for years, so she asks her roommates for sex advice. Paul has little sexual experience and is also anxious. On another occasion, they again try to have sex in her bedroom, but this fails due to inept attempts at dirty talk by both of them, her complex starfish outfit and her trying to choke him. They have sex on their third attempt, in Jess' building's elevator. Schmidt competes with a female co-worker at his boss' baby shower. Schmidt buys Cece a perfume which he had made for her. Paul gives Jess two tickets to Vienna and to the Salzburg Festival. She gives him a model of a heart. He tells her that he loves her. Schmidt brings the gang along with him to his office Christmas party, where Winston becomes friendly with the son of Schmidt's boss. Schmidt is disappointed that the party bus that he hired for his 29th birthday party has been assigned to Frankie Muniz instead. Jess uses a school bus for the party, which she invites her boss Tanya to. Jess hires a stripper for the party, but due to a misunderstanding, the stripper is male. Schmidt asks the stripper how to get into his line of work. Schmidt is disappointed when the stripper tells him that he earns $7,000 per year and that at least 90% of his clients are male. Nick introduces his new lawyer sex buddy Julia to the gang. Julia helps Jess fight a traffic ticket, but it results in a disagreement between them. They are very different and quickly take a disliking to each other. Winston reunites with Shelby, who was his booty call for two years, until two years ago. He wants to rekindle that arrangement, but she is unwilling to. Schmidt is puzzled why his towel is always wet. He is horrified when Nick tells him that he regularly uses the same towel. Nick and Jess are threatened by a man with a gun when they want the same parking space. Jess puts the gang's living arrangements in jeopardy when she brings the quirky landlord Remy into the apartment to fix things, against Nick's wishes. Nick points out to her that Remy wants to have sex with her, but she insists that Remy is just being friendly. Jess invites Remy to have dinner with her at the apartment. Schmidt and Winston leave, but Nick joins Jess and Remy. Remy assumes that they are going to have a devil's threesome, but Jess backs out of it. Schmidt struggles with how to respond to his boss Kim's ambiguous advances towards him. On Valentine's Day, Jess recruits Schmidt to go out and help her find a guy with whom to have her first one-night stand. At a bar, she meets Oliver, who is young, handsome and boring. She and Schmidt think he is ideal for her to have a one-night stand with because she has nothing in common with him. Cece's acquaintance Kurt joins her at the bar. Jess goes back to Oliver's apartment, driven by Schmidt because neither Jess nor Oliver have a car. At Oliver's apartment, the three watch Rise of the Planet of the Apes together. Jess and Oliver do not have sex because his former partner, Amy, who still lives with him, walks in. Oliver and Amy get back together. Cece picks Schmidt up because his car cannot be driven because its wheels have been stolen. Jess goes home and decides to hook up with Schmidt, but does not because Nick walks in as she is about to go into Schmidt's bedroom. Schmidt does not know what almost happened, because he is hooking up with Cece. Winston visits Shelby at her apartment, assuming that it will be just the two of them. When he arrives, he is disappointed to see that she is having a girls' night in with two of her friends. Nick spends the evening with a very busy Julia and her unpaid intern, Cliff, who is attracted to her. Cliff quits his job. Jess intervenes when a 12-year-old student of hers, Nathaniel, has been bullied for a few months. She subsequently becomes the target of one of the bullies in the same class, Brianna, who makes a video mocking Jess and uploads it to the Internet. In anger, Jess breaks the robotic arm which Brianna made for her science project. Schmidt and Cece continue their sex meetings. He wants to boast about their sex life but she does not want their friends to know about it, so he sneaks her into the apartment without their knowledge. Nick is worried when Julia sends him a cactus while she is in Beijing. He tries to figure out what it means about their relationship. She ends their fling because he left her seven voicemails asking about the meaning of giving it to him. Nick injures himself during a game of American football in the park - and refuses to see a doctor because of his lack of medical insurance. Jess takes him to see her OB/GYN friend, Sadie, for treatment. However, the diagnosis is much more serious than anyone expects, and it causes him to evaluate his life and friends. Winston must make a decision about his car. Schmidt and Cece's relationship opens up to a more emotional side. Jess learns firsthand about Schmidt's phobia regarding clean surroundings. Winston pesters Nick about owing him money from a poker game. Schmidt and Cece continue their sexual relationship, with Cece being the dominant partner, showing up in the middle of the night. Jess disagrees with a student's father, Russell, in regard to his daughter Sarah's priorities. When she goes to confront him about it, she ends up falling for him instead. Nick decides that he does not need a cell phone. Winston tries to impress Shelby by proving that he knows more trivia than Schmidt does. Jess and Russell go on their first date, but Jess feels uncomfortable afterward when Russell seems insufficiently interested in her. Nick's old college roommate, Dirk, visits and encourages Nick to date younger female college students. Winston finally decides to tell Shelby how he feels about her. He borrows Schmidt's car and drives to Mexico, where he thinks she is. He finds out that Schmidt and Cece are sex buddies after a United States Border Patrol officer finds them naked in the back of the car when Winston is driving back into the U.S. Winston spills the beans about Schmidt and Cece's casual sexual relationship, and the news finally spreads to Jess who does not take it well. Jess decides the roommates should be free with their secrets and is horrified at the secrets Cece reveals to her. Nick goes to Schmidt for dating advice. After spending a week at Russell's house, Jess returns the favor by having Russell stay over at the apartment with the guys for a weekend. The weekend does not turn out as planned. Winston gets his dream job, when he is hired to work for his favorite sports radio host, who turns out to be a short-tempered jerk. Jess meets Russell's ex-wife Ouli (Jeanne Tripplehorn) and agrees to babysit Sarah at the apartment. Jess is horrified when Sarah becomes attracted to Nick. Cece is scared that she is pregnant with Schmidt's child. Nick dates an artsy college student Chloe, who is 18 – younger than Nick thought. Winston tries to get his boss on the set of a talk show hosted by Michael Strahan. Jess assumes that there is still irritating sexual tension between Russell and his ex-wife Ouli, so she attempts to get the same kind of feelings from him, which does not go as planned. Nick attempts to grow tomatoes and temporarily give up on dating, but fails to do so. Cece admits her feelings to Schmidt after he is hospitalized in a sexual incident with her roommate Nadia. Jess, still heartbroken over her breakup with Russell, has a one-night stand with Paul. He later reveals that he has a girlfriend, Jenn – whom Jess describes as an Asian version of her. Paul tells Jenn, in front of Jess, that he had sex with Jess two days ago. He proposes to Jenn in front of Jess; Jenn accepts. Winston has his left ear pierced during a wild night out with his boss. Schmidt tells him that he looks ridiculous. Cece introduces Schmidt to her grandmother in her old people's home. Nick is back with Caroline. He is puzzled when she tells him that she is 33 – three years older than him. She had previously told him that she was the same age as him. He decides to move in with her, despite Schmidt and Winston trying to persuade him not to by reminding him of how unhappy she made him. Schmidt's penis needs to be put in a cast and feeling inadequate he drives Cece away. Nick freaks out about moving in with Caroline and drives his moving van, with Schmidt and Winston, into the desert and throws the key into a gully. Jess drives out with Cece to rescue them but throws her key into the gully to stop Nick returning to Caroline. Nick and Jess search for the keys in the dark and encounter a coyote. Jess tells him that she wants him to be happy. Jess finds her key, which was in her pocket, and drives everyone to Nick and Caroline's new apartment. Later that night, Nick turns up at the loft in the van.

season 2 -
Jess is laid off from her teaching job. Schmidt throws a party at Nick's bar, in celebration of his penis cast being removed. A new side of Winston is revealed after he drinks some of Nick's fruity concoctions. Cece introduces her new boyfriend, Robby, to Schmidt. Jess meets Sam, a handsome stranger who thinks she is Katie, his blind date. She pretends to be Katie and takes him back to the loft. A regular at Nick's bar claims he is Nick from the future and amazes Nick with some insights. When Winston's mother Charmaine and sister Alisha visit, Schmidt is determined to hook up with Alisha. Winston tells Nick that Jess is only using him as a fluffer. That is, Jess gets him to do many boyfriend-like things for Jess, but, unlike a boyfriend, he does not get any sex with her. Winston helps Schmidt get into a nightclub by having Schmidt pretend to be Tugg Romney, a fictional son of Mitt Romney's , and the scheme attracts a few sorority girls, who later that night realise that he is lying. As Winston and Shelby have not had sex for many weeks, Winston becomes concerned about whether he is psychologically cheating when he fantasizes about having sex with other women. Jess is able to easily impress their new neighbors - a trendy group twentysomething slackers - by doing impressions of Steve Urkel and other television sitcom characters. The group take an immediate disliking to Schmidt, who think they are writing him off as old. They tell him that the real reason is that they hate his personality. Nick works extra hard to pull an elaborate prank on Schmidt. During Cece's birthday, Jess is so frustrated by Cece's model friends that she insults Cece's modeling life. Jess tries to make up with Cece, but when Cece is not physically presentable for her modeling gig, Jess tries to model in her place. When Schmidt gifts Nick a cookie, he feels insulted and upset that Nick does not care about him or think of him at all, so Nick has to do something about that. Jess begins to have genuine feelings for Sam as more than a sexual partner, especially after seeing him work as a pediatrician during the day. Nick meets with Amelia, a girl he knew from college that he did not have a chance to date back then. Nick later goes into a haunted house, despite being completely scared of them. Schmidt intrudes on Cece and Robby's Halloween date. Winston breaks up with Shelby after they have a disagreement over her Halloween costume. Still unable to find a new job, Jess blames her problems on premenstrual syndrome. Winston also thinks he is suffering from PMS, even though he is a man. After hanging out with Tran, a quiet old man in the park who listens to Nick and just smiles back at him, Nick becomes less angry. Schmidt agrees to sign a sex contract with his new boss Emma. Cece is disappointed that Robby thinks of her as a "nice girl". Jess' divorced parents, Joan and Bob, come over to the apartment for Thanksgiving; Jess tries to get them back together despite numerous failed Parent Trap-like attempts in the past. Schmidt's cousin, also named Schmidt, comes over, spurring a manly competition between the two with Winston as the judge and the winner getting the rights to be called Schmidt. Jess and Cece are advised by Jess's lesbian gynecologist friend Sadie to have a health check on their ovarian reserves (how much longer they have to produce viable eggs for children). While Jess's test results turn out fine, Cece becomes concerned she is running out of time. Schmidt is disappointed by being unable to satisfy Emma during intercourse. Nick attempts to work on his zombie novel. Tired of taking showers, Jess proposes the gang buy a bathtub, but Nick and Schmidt reject the idea. Winston later joins Jess to purchase a tub to place on the roof but it breaks partly through, spilling water on Schmidt's suits. They attempt to fool Schmidt by staging a robbery, which they think has worked - until Schmidt reveals he has camera surveillance. Nick tries to hook up with Angie, a bar patron who was drinking alone, having fought with her hot-headed boyfriend. When Cece mentions she has broken up with Robby, Schmidt tries to win her back, but he has to deal with Emma first. The gang attends several Christmas parties on Christmas Eve. Sam tries to win Jess back. Nick is intimidated by Angie being very sexually adventurous in public. Schmidt rejects Cece's Christmas gift after she denies him after he proclaimed his love for her. Jess asks Nick and Angie to come along on a cabin trip with her and Sam. Schmidt feels Winston is holding back on his "blackness", so he agrees to spend the day doing things that Winston wants to do. Nick's con man father, Walt, visits. Nick is disappointed because he realises that Walt is in town to pull off another scam, but this one involving a horse. Walt tricks Jess into being involved in the scam. The scam is foiled by Nick's anxiety. Schmidt and Robbie team up to try to win Cece back. Nick thinks that Edgar, a student in Jess' creative writing class, is a psychopathic killer - because of the violent stories he writes and pictures he draws. Jess and Nick go to Edgar's house and discover that the stories have no relation to his real-life personality. Schmidt and Winston try to find from each other what is being said about them when they are not in the room. Nick, Schmidt and Winston try to get lucky with women by spending a "guys' night out" at the bar, while Jess is in the apartment alone. Nick and Schmidt compete to get the attention of Holly, a woman who is sexually attracted to sadness, while Winston spends time with Daisy, a woman helping him to be comfortable speaking to women again. The gang attends an Indian marriage convention with Cece, where she hopes to find her future husband. While there, Schmidt once again tries to win Cece back. Jess and Nick try to discuss the intimate moment they shared the night before. Anu, the head of the marriage convention hits on Winston. Schmidt finds an extra parking spot, but the four roommates fight over who gets to use it. At first it appears to be a showdown between Schmidt and Jess where they try to convince Nick to award the spot, but then changes to whoever can get their car to the spot first and whoever can stay at the spot the longest. Jess and Nick also work through the effect of their kiss on the relationship dynamics in the apartment, and Winston goes on a trek to find a condom with which to have sex with Daisy. He eventually gets one, but then cannot find his way back to Daisy's apartment. Schmidt and Nick throw a party to celebrate being roommates for ten years, but Nick has trouble with his assignment of getting portable toilets. Winston becomes good friends with Jax McTavish, a football player that Jess becomes attracted to. Cece and Shivrang begin to question their relationship leading up to their arranged marriage. Jess becomes sexually attracted to Nick when she sees that he is applying himself more at his bartending job. However, Jess does not know that Nick is only acting this way because he is dating his new boss, Shane. Schmidt is inspired to acquire a lionfish, which everyone else interprets as pining for Cece. He gets Winston to help him catch one in the ocean. Jess, Schmidt and Winston travel with Nick to his hometown Chicago to help with his father's funeral arrangements. While there, they meet Nick's eccentric family: his mother, brother, cousin and grandmother. Jess is asked to write a eulogy, while Winston helps Schmidt overcome his fear of death. Nick musters up the courage to go on a first date with Jess, but the actual date causes confusing feelings for the both of them. While at the restaurant for their date, they accidentally run into Jess' ex-boyfriend Russell and his date. Feeling that the roommate dynamic will be ruined if Jess and Nick become a couple, Schmidt and Winston plot to stop it from happening. Jess plans a surprise bachelorette party for Cece. Meanwhile, Nick and Winston spend some "guy time" with Shivrang. Schmidt is offended that he did not get a plus one invitation to Cece's wedding, so he sets out to find his plus one, including stopping at the door of his college ex-girlfriend, Elizabeth. Cece feels the wedding is happening too soon and she is disappointed to have not seen Shivrang's penis. Cece asks Jess to be her maid-of-honor, which she accepts. The gang reminisce about losing their virginities, and have a contest about who had the worst experience. Jess' dad, Bob, visits the apartment the day after Jess and Nick spend the night together. Schmidt is embarrassed to mention to other people that Elizabeth is his girlfriend. Winston spends the day hoping his friends remember that it is his birthday. Cece's wedding day arrives. Schmidt and Winston plan to sabotage the wedding after Schmidt has an "eye conversation" with Cece, where she apparently tells him that she is wanting to back out of the wedding. Jess and Nick become conflicted about their past, increasingly feeling that their relationship is a mistake. Shivrang's ex, Elaine interrupts the wedding and they leave together, spurring Cece to confessing her true feelings for Schmidt. While leaving the wedding, Jess begs Nick not to give up on their relationship upon which he kisses her and they drive away into the night.

season 3 -
After Cece's wedding, Nick and Jess flee to Mexico for some alone time and Nick ends up in trouble with the law. Meanwhile, back home, Schmidt cannot bring himself to decide between Cece and Elizabeth and Winston has trouble assembling a jigsaw puzzle. With Nick's help, Jess tries to fit in with a group of cool teachers Molly, Rose and Dan, by sneaking in to use their principal's Dr. Foster's hot tub. Schmidt has to deal with both Cece and Elizabeth attending a party at his job, while he is still dating them both, while also dealing with his co-worker Beth trying to sabotage things for him. Winston is left taking care of Daisy's cat Furguson, after deciding that he wants to date her exclusively, even though she is already sexually active with another guy. Nick finds out about Schmidt dating both Cece and Elizabeth, and has a hard time keeping the secret to himself. Winston is left the responsibility of reserving a table for the gang at a restaurant. Schmidt plots to break up Jess and Nick, just as they are about to celebrate dating for a month. Winston tries to get Furguson to have sex with a female cat before being neutered. He meets a woman called Kylie who has a cat named Fatty. He brings Kylie and Fatty back to the apartment. She thinks he wants her, and leaves in disappointed anger when she finds out that he only wanted her cat for his cat. Nick becomes irresponsible with the money from his late father's estate, so Jess uses some of the money to pay Nick's unpaid bills, behind his back. With Nick's improved financial situation, Winston feels its finally time to ask Nick for the money he owes him. Still feeling guilty about hurting Cece and Elizabeth, Schmidt seeks advice from Rabbi Feiglin and then saves the life of Mike, a bike messenger who nearly choked on his gum. Schmidt receives a series of recent e-mails from his favorite actor Michael Keaton, who has sent letters to him ever since he was a kid. However, it turns out those letters and e-mails were not from the actor but from Schmidt's mother and Nick, posing as Keaton. Cece indulges in nightly parties to get over her break up with Schmidt. Coach visits the apartment to spend a "guys night out" with the guys, after breaking up with his girlfriend. Nick going to a strip club with the guys, and telling her that they haven't had a conversation about whether or not they're boyfriend/girlfriend or are exclusive, upsets Jess to the point that she has "girls night out" with Cece at the bar. While at the bar, Jess gets hit on by Artie, the owner of a coffee shop that she frequently goes to. After being denied permission to take her class to the beach, Jess focuses her attention on fighting Brian, a Chinese restaurant owner who floods the apartment with his restaurant menus. Coach tries to get Nick in shape, Winston also tries to get involved in their workout, but keeps getting hurt. Schmidt starts to feel left out by the gang, now that he lives across the hall from them and Coach has moved into his room. Schmidt becomes jealous when Coach and Cece go on a date, with Jess being left the responsibility of calming his nerves while the date is taking place. Nick accidentally loses Furguson, while Winston goes out. The cat is later found by Bertie, a woman that Winston becomes instantly attracted to. To prove to Coach that Nick still has a secure manhood while dating Jess, the gang has Thanksgiving in the wilderness. Jess gets a job offer to work at a museum and has minutes to make her decision to take the job or not. The gang also helps her on her decision. Jess tries to become good friends with Coach by watching Detroit Pistons games with him and becoming a Pistons "fan". However Jess' "fandom" starts to interfere with her relationship with Nick, who is a lifelong Chicago Bulls fan. Winston agrees to shadow Schmidt at his marketing job, where Schmidt is later asked to guide Ed, a sixty-something intern, to avoid a company lawsuit over age discrimination. Its Jess' birthday, with Nick planning out the entire day. Schmidt helps Cece be a better bartender, while she is continually being ridiculed by her co-worker Mike. Coach and Winston compete to bake the perfect birthday cake for Jess. Jess and Cece are invited to a party at a mansion held by Prince. Nick blurts out that he loves Jess, with Jess giving an unexpected response. As a result, Nick and the guys try to get into Prince's mansion so Nick can set the record straight with Jess. Jess tries to prove to Nick that exes can still be friends, by introducing him to her ex-boyfriend Berkley. Caroline returns, wanting an explanation from Nick for why he left her. Schmidt finally finishes decorating his new apartment, and then agrees to have Coach and Winston use it whenever they please. Jess is asked by her mother to pick up her troublesome older sister Abby from jail. Jess also tries to prevent Nick from meeting Abby, because of her sister's unruly behavior. Meanwhile, Nick accompanies Schmidt to a Bar Mitzvah, so Schmidt can go on a date with Rachael, who is the daughter of Rabbi Feiglin, who dislikes Schmidt. Cece and Coach are the only ones that attend a soup dinner party held by Winston and Birdie. When Abby announces that she is staying in the loft permanently, Jess then goes to find a safe place for Abby to live. Nick is then left to baby-sit Abby, while Jess looks for Abby's new place. Winston is nervous about looking at the results of his LAPD entrance exam. Schmidt and Abby are now dating, with Abby also living in Schmidt's place. Feeling jealous about Schmidt and Abby's relationship, Jess decides to move into Nick's room, however, the living arrangement does not make either one of them happy. Cece begins treating Coach as just a friend, to the point that Coach begins acting feminine. Winston tries to get into physical shape to ace the LAPD obstacle course. Jess gets Coach a coaching job at her school, she must then fire him for budget reasons, after being promoted to vice principal. Schmidt gets sued and has Nick (who passed his bar exam and was referred to as "Slippin Miller" in his college days) and Winston (who loves legal procedural shows), to represent him in a deposition. Cece gets hit on by a younger Australian guy named Buster. Still hung over from playing a game of True American the night before, Jess and Nick have a serious argument about their future together. Coach, Schmidt and Winston compete to get the attention of two attractive neighbors Michelle and Laurie, who are moving into the building. Cece accidentally drunk texts Buster. Jess and Nick deal with the aftermath of their break up. Nick tries to not think about the break up by planning a "honey roast" for Winston to celebrate the news of him passing his police academy entrance exam. Jess seeks comfort from Cece, even though Cece is busy studying for her GED exam with help from Schmidt. Jess is in charge of the school dance, but the teachers that she has recruited to chaperone bail, leaving Jess to call Cece and the guys to chaperone instead. With the gang attending yet another wedding this summer, Schmidt motivates everyone to get back in the sexual game. Jess competes with Kat, an overachieving scientist, for the affection of Ted. Ted is the best man - and, according to Kat is the only eligible guy at the wedding. Schmidt tries to convince Nick to take part in a foursome with two of the bridesmaids - but then Schmidt decides against it. Coach has a hard time trying to hook up with women at the wedding because of his history with them, while Winston tries to function while being really physically sore from training at the police academy. Cece reveals that she and Buster have broken up. Jess uses a dating app called Dice and with a little help from Schmidt to effectively find the best guy for her. Coach reveals that he never tried marijuana, so Nick and Cece bake brownies for Coach's first stoned experience, where they all get stoned, just as LAPD cadet Winston invites them all to a barbecue with other LAPD cadets. Jess' father Bob visits with his new young girlfriend Ashley Berkman, a classmate from Jess' old high school and a recovering sex addict. Bob proposes to Ashley and she accepts. Schmidt rigs a product focus group with Coach, Nick and Winston participating on giving their thoughts on sponges. Jess tries to prove to the guys that she is not superficial by dating Matt, a handsome guy who has a rare male endowment issue (a micropenis). She stops seeing him after his girlfriend walks in. Cece and Winston trick Coach and Schmidt into thinking that they are good looking enough to be male models. As a part of his police academy processing, Winston must undergo a background check, as well as having the apartment searched by his superior Dorado. However, Jess reveals to the guys that she has a bag of meth in her possession. She informs the officer doing the check, who tells Jess that the 'meth' is actually aquarium rocks. Nick pretends to be gay to avoid conflict with Jess' new boyfriend Ian. When Cece reveals that she is considering breast reduction surgery, Schmidt is emotionally distraught. Winston does handyman tasks hoping it will lead to him sleeping with either Michelle or her new roommate Viv, but Coach tries to short cut the strategy. Jess and Coach go to a teachers workshop during the weekend, held by Brenda Brown, a free-spirited education guru. During the weekend, Jess is terrified to spend any intimate time with Ryan and Coach is doubtful that he will be a good enough health teacher. While Jess is away, Nick, Schmidt and Winston have a "guys weekend". For Thanksgiving, Schmidt demands that everyone bring a friend to sleep with another friend for "Bangsgiving". Coach invites Ryan for the occasion, with Jess still having conflicting feelings for him. An old disagreement between Jess and Cece is brought up again, causing more tense ramifications than before. Nick begins dating Tran's granddaughter Kai with Winston putting the thought into Nick's mind that she may be homeless. Winston has a hard time buckling down to study for the LAPD entrance exam. The gang arrives at the Los Angeles International Airport, where most of their flights are delayed. Jess is invited by Ryan to meet his family in the United Kingdom for Christmas, and is worried that she is not good enough for them when she sees his family's house, and gives up when her gifts are stolen by a perverted Santa. Coach wants to go vacationing instead of seeing his sister and niece. Schmidt and Cece visit an airport lounge. Jess and Schmidt disagree on the approach that should be taken concerning overnight construction disturbing the neighborhood. Matters get even more complicated with Schmidt falling for Fawn Moscato, a cold and manipulative councilwoman working for the neighborhood district.
