PLOT:
Tony Micelli, a retired baseball player, becomes the housekeeper of Angela Bower, an advertising executive in New York. Together, they raise their kids, Samantha Micelli and Jonathan Bower, with help from Mona Robinson, Angela's man-crazy mother.
season 1 -
Tony has a date and, thinking Angela won't be home for hours, decides to take a bath in her tub. Angela firmly and Tony mildly lecture Sam for fighting in the park and thus causing Jonathan to trade his first punches. Instead of learning a lesson, Sam tells Jonathan all about "cool, exciting" Brooklyn life. When she decides to run away, Jonathan insists on tagging along. Tony and Angela set out to get them back. Mona is dating a much younger man. Angela has landed an account with a commercial, so Tony and Mona "invite" themselves to come along. Client Mr. Larson insists Tony must replace the actor scheduled for the Machismo shaving scream shower scene. He does great, but gets a terrible rash afterward. Larson wants Angela's agency and Tony for an even bigger account, but refuses to retract the cream, which lab tests say irritate 2 to 3 percent of users. With Mona and the kids away for a couple of days, Tony makes a date. Angela also has a guy coming in to see her so she arranges for a meal to be catered. When the guy doesn't show up, and when the caterer does, he convinces Tony not to leave Angela alone. In town for a reunion, Angela's sorority sister, who's used to taking everything of Angela's, sets her sights on Tony. Tony is dating a woman who thinks he's very rich while Angela is seeing a guy who thinks she's a secretary. Angela's new boyfriend upon meeting Tony and knowing he's a former player latches on to him. And they hang out a lot. But when Tony sees him pick up another woman, he doesn't know whether to tell Angela or not. When Mona discovers Tony spends time and seems to need an extra income, she follows him to Brooklyn. Assumptions he either has mob debts or a New York lover are found false, he actually pays for the apartment where he was raised by his deceased father. Angela tries to convince him to cut the emotional tie to the past. A baffled and unprepared Tony protests the actions of Angela, Mona and Mother Nature as his tomboy daughter, Sam, slips subtly into womanhood. Angela has her car painted and left instructions of what color she wants. But Tony thinking her choice is dull, decides on a different color. And when she sees what he did, she lays down the law on who is the boss and who is the maid. That's when Tony becomes subservient. And her neighbor upon learning the friction between them decides to make Tony an offer to work for her. When Angela hears her firm's owner is retiring, she fears competent colleague VP Jim Petersen will maneuver to replace her as president. She tries to win the board's sympathy by staging a party when Jim has a family function, but he turns up, sports talk stirs the old boys network and unrepentant Tony's temper makes things worse. Mona has been evicted from her apartment for keeping a dog. Tony's family sense practically forces Angela to invite her mother to move in. Tony hires father and son Battaglia from Brooklyn to convert an old barn into a separate apartment, but mother and daughter bicker endlessly and bitterly over every concept and every detail. Tony intervenes again when they are on non-speaking terms. Angela's husband, Michael, a researcher in the jungle, shows up after she sent him divorce papers. After leaving Angela, Tony finds a new job. And the old problems between Angela and Michael resurface. Angela announces proud as a peacock she has been chosen as the next guest subject on regional TV star presenter Robert "Bobby" Barnes' show, which is renowned for scandal, which the host has found with Tony and Angela's living arrangement. School coach Tony opposes Sam attending the school dance, suspicious of boys, until he realizes the suitor is utter klutz Bobby Michaelson. However, the kids are increasingly annoyed and embarrassed as Tony and his camera hover around every step of the dance, horrified to hear his surprise: he volunteered last minute as a chaperon. Even that is topped by Tony being seen dancing and kissing with "Old Lady Scranton", their foxy teacher. Tony is suspicious of his father-in-law's motives and means when, out of nowhere, he arrives on Angela's doorstep and lavishes Samantha with expensive gifts. Angela is worried that the stories Tony has been telling about his childhood pranks are the cause of Jonathan's strange behavior changes. Tony and Samantha must come to grips with the affluence of their community when Samantha desperately wants to go on a ski trip that Tony can't afford. Temptation threatens to singe employer/employee relationships when Angela and Tony find themselves alone "celebrating" Angela's birthday.
season 2 -
While retrieving a homesick Jonathan from summer camp, Angela wistfully reminisces about her romantic awakening there some twenty years ago, but is shocked to realize that it may have been a younger Tony that may have been her first kiss. Tony and Angela's teenage summer camp encounter at "kissing rock" creates unexpected friction when a sudden thunderstorm thrusts them together again, this time in a secluded motel room. Samantha's desperation to become a member of her new junior high school's "in-crowd" places Tony in a difficult, and high-paying, position. Mona delights at the prospect of spending her inheritance from a mysterious benefactor until Tony's innocent diligence confirms Angela's worst suspicion about the philanthropist. Tony's attempt at arranging a date between Angela and his recently divorced buddy leads to a battle royal when the lively Mona intervenes. Tony frolics with the legendary California beach beauties while Angela slugs it out with her ex-husband, whose imminent marriage brings the gang to sunny California. Tony's and Mona's scheme to thwart Michael from gaining custody of Jonathan backfires, but Jonathan's own surprising behavior at his father's wedding saves the day in Angela's favor. Tony poses for Mona's Hunk-of-the-Month calendar, and catches the fancy of a purring beauty whose unusual love for felines proves to be his undoing on their first date. Tony takes Angela and the kids on a pilgrimage to Brooklyn for Thanksgiving, but Angela's not so grateful when the feast includes a heavy helping of male chauvinism. Tony's jailbird former father-in-law flies the coop after his unsuccessful bid for parole when he learns that Samantha has disowned him. Mona's undercover role in a sting operation to expose age discrimination backfires when Tony and Angela pull strings to help her get a foot inside the door of a shoe company. Tony gets an offer he can't refuse when his Italian uncle entrusts him with engaged cousin Anna, but her arranged marriage may be "rubbed out" after Angela, Mona and Samantha "Americanize" her. Tony and Angela cheer Samantha for landing a coveted position on her school's drill team, but jeer at her for intentionally dropping the ball in her new job as Angela's Saturday secretary. Tony's use of female mud wrestlers in a homework assignment for Angela's advertising class creates a sensation, but clouds his chances to become teacher's pet. Samantha's "discovered" talents as a ballerina has Tony ready for them both to pirouette up the ladder of success, until Mona steps on his toes and suggests he hang up his tutu before becoming an overbearing stage parent. Samantha's babysitting days are over when Tony catches her sweetheart with his hand stuck in the kitchen plumbing and her girlfriends romping through the house while Jonathan is supposed to be sleeping. Two timely blind date proposals help soothe the Valentine's Day blues for both Tony and Angela, until they discover that it's Jonathan who's shooting Cupid's arrow. Angela's dealt a full house when she agrees to host Tony's poker party with one condition: that he keeps his roughneck buddies away from her "seemingly" prudish friend. Tony tones down his celebration after winning a bowling tournament when Angela veers into the losers lane of an advertising awards competition, but he has plans to salvage a classy victory for her. Tony becomes embroiled in a mudslinging campaign when he accepts the nomination for Fairfield School PTA president, but it's manager Angela's reputation that takes the beating when Tony publicly defines their "relationship". When a perfume heiress is sent by her father to secure an advertising deal, executive Angela goes all-out to court the account, but little does she know that the sophisticate is doing some courting of her own, with an unsuspecting Tony. The sultry neighborhood siren, on the outs with her husband, persuades Angela to take her in, then upsets the Bower household by singing her song for Tony.
