PLOT:

San Francisco, California, November 18, 1978. At 48, San Francisco Supervisor Harvey Milk, the first openly gay man elected to public office, records his will, fearing for his life. Through flashbacks, Milk reflects on his turbulent personal journey and how it all began at 40 when he moved with Scott Smith, his lover and future campaign manager, to the Castro District, one of the first gay communities in the country. The biopic follows Milk's constant struggle for individual freedom and his rise from a closeted New York accountant to an advocate for equal rights and a national symbol. Throughout the film, Milk fights to make a difference in the face of anti-gay voices as Anita Bryant's Save Our Children campaign gathers strength. It depicts Milk's last days in San Francisco before former city supervisor Dan White assassinated him and San Francisco Mayor George Moscone on November 27, 1978.
