PLOT:
"In every generation there is a chosen one... she alone will stand against the vampires, the demons and the forces of darkness. She is the slayer." Buffy Summers knows this tale by heart, and no matter how hard she tries to be just a "normal girl", she cannot escape from her destiny... Thankfully, she is not alone in her quest to save the world, as she has the help of her friends, the hilarious (and surprisingly quite effective) evil-fighting team called "The Scooby Gang". Together, Buffy & co. will slay their demons, survive one apocalypse after another, attend high school and college... and above all, understand that growing up can truly be Hell sometimes... literally.
season 1 -
A vampire named Darla, a member of the Order of Aurelius and a servant of The Master, murders a student and stuffs him in a locker. Buffy Summers arrives in Sunnydale hoping to have a fresh start free from her Slayer responsibilities. Popular yet vapid cheerleader Cordelia Chase attempts to befriend Buffy, but Buffy is repulsed by Cordelia's dismissive treatment of outcasts Xander Harris, Willow Rosenberg, and Jesse McNally. Buffy meets her new Watcher, Sunnydale High's librarian Rupert Giles, who warns Buffy that an increase in supernatural phenomena in Sunnydale in recent years is an indication of a forthcoming demon uprising. A mysterious figure named Angel, claiming to be a friend, offers guidance and warns about a "Harvest". That night, at a nightclub called The Bronze, a group of vampires led by Darla attempt to kidnap Willow and Jesse. Buffy manages to kill one of the vampires and scares Darla off, rescuing Willow, but a stronger vampire named Luke corners her. After escaping from Luke, Buffy regroups with Giles, Xander, and Willow. Following up on Angel's cryptic clue, Giles and Willow investigate the Harvest in books of demon mythology while Buffy and Xander venture into the sewers in search of Jesse. To their horror, they discover that Jesse has been sired into a vampire and only narrowly escape him. Giles and Willow have discovered that Sunnydale is built on a Hellmouth, a portal to demon dimensions, and that the Harvest is an event where a "vessel" of the Master drinks the blood of several victims to increase The Master's strength. Realizing that the Harvest will take place that night at The Bronze, the gang prepares for battle. Buffy is forced to navigate her fractured relationship with her mother Joyce, who is oblivious to Buffy's Slayer role and believes her to be delinquent. At The Bronze, Buffy interrupts the Harvest and kills the vampires, infuriating The Master. The following day, Giles worries that Buffy and her friends are ill-equipped for the fight ahead of them. At try-outs for Sunnydale High's cheerleading squad, one entrant spontaneously catches fire. Buffy, Willow, Xander, and Giles investigate. Another hopeful, Amy, stumbles during practice, knocking over Cordelia, and does not make the team. Soon after, Cordelia becomes disoriented and loses her sight. Buffy narrowly saves her from being run over. Buffy suspects that Amy may be a witch, causing these and other incidents in an attempt to make the cheerleading team. Buffy spills a potion on Amy and it turns blue, indicating recent use of magic. Amy realizes what is going on and casts a spell on Buffy that threatens to kill her if left unreversed. Arriving at Amy's home, Giles and Buffy confront her "mother", but quickly realize that Amy's mother Catherine, a witch and former cheerleader herself, has possessed her daughter's body. Giles works to reverse the spells, and is able to just before Catherine kills Buffy. After the spells are reversed, the two fight, and Buffy is able to reflect a spell back on Catherine, who is apparently killed. Restored to her original body, Amy and Buffy become friends, while Catherine is shown to be trapped inside a cheerleading trophy. Shortly after a conversation with Buffy, Sunnydale's science teacher Dr Gregory is attacked and goes missing. At a party, Angel appears and warns Buffy that somebody is coming. A substitute teacher, Miss French, arrives, and Xander and other boys at Sunnydale, including Blayne, are immediately smitten. Arriving at the class, Buffy notices that Dr. Gregory's glasses have been left abandoned. Later, Cordelia stumbles upon Dr. Gregory's headless corpse. Buffy investigates the death of a homeless man, suspecting it may be connected, and confronts a vampire she finds in the park. The vampire flees, encounters Miss French and is frightened by her, while Buffy watches. Buffy deduces that Miss French is a giant praying mantis. Buffy tries to warn Xander, but Miss French has released pheromones that seduce Xander. He goes to Miss French's house, where she drugs and imprisons him alongside Blayne, intending to use them to fertilize her eggs. Buffy and Giles track down the house, with the help of the vampire she met in the park earlier, and are able to kill Miss French in time to save Xander and Blayne. Under Dr. Gregory's desk, some mantis eggs hatch. After slaying a vampire, Buffy and Giles find a ring that they link with a prophecy of the Anointed One, who can free the Master from his prison. Buffy arranges a date with a student named Owen, but Giles believes that the prophecy will be fulfilled that evening. The two wait at the graveyard, but see nothing. That evening, a bus crashes and five people die after vampires attack it. Giles connects the crash to the prophecy, but Buffy decides to leave with Owen. Giles visits the funeral home, and is cornered by vampires. Angel warns Buffy about the Prophecy, but she dismisses the warnings until Willow and Xander show up. Owen follows the three to the funeral home, and Buffy leaves him with Xander and Willow. However, they run into a victim of the bus crash, now a vampire. Buffy, Giles, and Owen subdue the vampire, before Buffy forces him into a furnace. The next day, Owen asks for another date, but Buffy refuses, fearing for his safety should they stay together. Giles and Buffy take comfort in believing that they stopped the prophecy, but the real Anointed One, a young boy, meets the Master in his underground lair. At the zoo, four students sneak into the hyena habitat. Xander follows, hoping to rescue them, while Buffy and Willow are stopped by a zookeeper. The four students and Xander are possessed by the hyenas' spirits. The spirits cause the group to act increasingly strangely, Xander refusing to study with Willow before insulting her, and the whole group attacking another student at a dodgeball game. A piglet mascot for the school acts panicked in Xander's presence, and the group later kill and eat it. Buffy suspects that something has affected Xander, but Giles is initially skeptical. Buffy captures Xander, while the other four possessed students attack and eat the principal. Buffy and Giles return to the zoo, while Willow guards Xander. Buffy and Giles meet the zookeeper, and together they form a plan to reverse the possession. The four other students find Xander and Willow, and are able to free Xander. Buffy lures the group back to the zoo, while Giles learns that the zookeeper had intended to absorb the spirits himself. When the group turns up, he takes control of the hyenas' spirits, but Buffy and the now-free Xander force him into the hyena enclosure, where he is eaten. The Master sends three warrior vampires after Buffy, but with Angel's help she escapes, although Angel is injured. The pair retreat to Buffy's house. Angel explains that he fights vampires because his family was killed by them. The Master has the three warriors killed in front of the Anointed One. The next day, Buffy returns to Angel, and after he confesses his attraction to her, they kiss. Angel pulls back, revealing his true vampire face, and leaves. Giles learns that Angel used to be called Angelus, a vampire who lived in Europe before moving to America and becoming a recluse. Darla bites Buffy's mother Joyce, and attempts to frame Angel for it. He resists the temptation to bite, but Buffy arrives while he is still holding Joyce's unconscious body. Buffy drives Angel away, takes Joyce to hospital, and goes to kill Angel, tracking him to The Bronze, where the two briefly fight. Angel reveals that he killed his family, along with a Romani girl, whose family cursed him by restoring his soul. Darla shoots at Angel and Buffy, before Angel kills Darla. Later, Angel and Buffy meet, and the two share a kiss before saying goodbye. In 1418, priests trap the demon Moloch inside a book. In the present day, Willow scans that book into the computer. The text in the book disappears. The following week, Willow tells Buffy that she has developed an online relationship with a boy called "Malcolm". Moloch, who has passed into the computer, instructs a student named Fritz to watch Buffy. Wanting to learn more about "Malcolm", Buffy talks to another student, Dave, who warns Buffy to leave Willow alone. Willow asks to meet "Malcolm", but when he shares information about Buffy's past, Willow becomes suspicious and ends the chat. Dave tells Buffy that Willow wants to meet her, but then warns her just before she is electrocuted in a trap set by Fritz. Fritz fakes Dave's suicide on Moloch's orders. Giles asks Jenny Calendar, Sunnydale's computing teacher, to work with him to stop Moloch. He is surprised to learn that Jenny is already familiar with demons. Fritz kidnaps Willow, taking her to a facility where Moloch, who pretended to be Malcolm, has taken control of a robotic body. Moloch also kills Fritz. Giles and Jenny cast a spell to purge Moloch from the internet, while Buffy destroys his robot host. Shortly after a rehearsal for a talent show, a girl is killed and her heart removed. Giles, Buffy, Willow, and Xander investigate, and are led to Morgan, a ventriloquist with a dummy called Sid. After an incident at her house, Buffy suspects that Sid is self-aware. In a history class, the teacher confiscates Sid, and Xander steals the dummy. When Sid remains inanimate, Xander mocks Buffy's suspicions. Buffy leaves to find Morgan, and when Xander turns his back, Sid disappears. Buffy finds Morgan backstage, dead and missing his brain. A chandelier falls on Buffy and traps her. Sid stabs at her, but Buffy escapes and subdues him. Sid reveals that he also hunts demons, and thought that Buffy was one. Sid explains that he was cursed to become a dummy, and needs to kill the real demon to lift the curse, although to do so would mean his death. Buffy finds Morgan's brain, and after discovering that he was suffering from brain cancer, realizes that the demon still needs a viable brain. The demon ties Giles to a guillotine. Buffy, Xander, and Willow free Giles, and Sid cuts out the demon's heart, ending his curse and dying. In class, Buffy sees a boy standing outside the door, and immediately afterwards a student, Wendell, opens his book to reveal several spiders. Wendell tells Willow and Xander that he regularly has nightmares about spiders. Several other students also experience their nightmares coming true. A girl, Laura, is attacked by a demon. Buffy and Giles visit her in hospital, where they see a boy, Billy, in a coma. Buffy realizes that Billy is the boy she saw earlier. Buffy's dad, Hank Summers, who was due to spend the weekend with Buffy, tells her that she was responsible for he and Joyce splitting up. Buffy talks to Billy, and is attacked by the demon that attacked Laura. Attempting to escape, the pair end up in the graveyard, and encounter The Master, who pushes Buffy into a coffin and buries her. Buffy escapes, but has become a vampire. Giles suggests that waking Billy will end the nightmares. However, Billy refuses to wake, scared of the demon. Buffy attacks and defeats the demon, proving to Billy that it is no threat. Billy wakes, restoring reality. Later, Hank behaves normally, revealing that their previous interaction was a nightmare. In the changing rooms, a student hears a girl laughing, but sees nothing, before being beaten with a baseball bat. Later, a girl falls down the stairs but claims she was pushed, although nobody sees who pushed her. Cordelia rescues her English teacher from suffocation. Buffy hears a flute playing, and deduces that Marcie, a flautist who disappeared some months ago, has become invisible and is behind the incidents. Separately, Angel tells Giles that he can find a book vital to Giles's research about The Master. Giles suggests that Marcie became invisible as a direct result of being ignored by everybody at the school. Cordelia asks Buffy for help, and confesses that, despite being popular, she often feels alone. Marcie traps Xander, Willow, and Giles in the boiler room filling up with gas. Angel rescues them before giving Giles the book. Marcie kidnaps Cordelia and Buffy, taking both to The Bronze and tying them up. Marcie plans to disfigure Cordelia's face, slashing it once before Buffy breaks loose. Initially hampered by being unable to see Marcie, Buffy focuses and defeats her. Men dressed in black arrive and take Marcie to a class with other invisible people, to learn about assassination. Reading the book that Angel gave him, Giles discovers a prophecy that the Slayer shall die in battle against The Master. An earthquake shakes Sunnydale, indicating that the prophecy is imminent. Xander asks Buffy to the upcoming prom, but she declines. Buffy overhears Angel and Giles discussing the prophecy, and that she will die the following night. She quits slaying in an attempt to avoid her fate, preparing instead to go to the prom. Willow and Cordelia come across a room full of students killed by vampires. Willow tells Buffy, and Buffy decides to fight after all. Giles attempts to persuade Buffy not to fight, but she knocks him out and leaves. Buffy meets with the Anointed One, who leads her to The Master. Xander persuades Angel to join the fight. The Master easily overpowers Buffy, biting her and leaving her for dead. He breaks free of the magical barrier holding him captive. Jenny and Willow are surrounded by vampires, but are rescued by Cordelia. Angel and Xander find Buffy and resuscitate her. Displaying newfound strength, Buffy confronts The Master. After a brief fight, Buffy overpowers him and he is impaled on broken furniture, closing the Hellmouth.
season 2 -
After a quiet summer, Xander and Willow are attacked by a vampire, but saved by Buffy, who has returned from Los Angeles. Buffy has a dream where the Master, whom she had killed earlier, attacks her again. Angel appears in Buffy's room and warns her that The Anointed One is gathering vampires to him. At The Bronze, Buffy flirts with Xander in front of Angel and Willow. Cordelia confronts Buffy about her behavior, but Buffy rejects the advice and leaves. Soon after Buffy's back is turned, Cordelia is attacked and kidnapped. Buffy discovers that The Master's skeleton has disappeared from the grave, and Giles suggests that The Anointed One will attempt to use the skeleton to revive him. Someone delivers a message to the library, summoning Buffy to The Bronze. On the way, she runs into Angel, and challenges him to a fight, but they go to the Bronze together. Once there, they find only a single vampire. At the library, several vampires capture Giles and Willow, taking them, along with Cordelia and Jenny Calendar, to The Master's skeleton. Buffy finds them and attacks the vampires, overpowering them and smashing the skeleton, while Angel and Xander rescue the prisoners. After killing some vampires, Buffy and Angel find an open grave, from which the body has been stolen. Later, Cordelia and Angel come across body parts belonging to three girls who died in a car crash. Buffy and her friends suspect that two science students, Chris and Eric, have been using the body parts to create a new body, with the intention of resurrecting it to build a bride for Chris's brother Daryl, who had died several months earlier and has already been reanimated. Chris and Eric decide that they need a fresh head, as the process of adding formaldehyde to the corpses has caused the brains to decay too quickly. They attempt to kidnap Cordelia, but Buffy arrives in time to rescue her. Buffy persuades Chris to abandon the plan, but Eric and Daryl kidnap Cordelia at a football game. Chris leads Buffy to the lab, where she fights Daryl. During the fight, Buffy accidentally sets the lab on fire. Daryl stays with the unfinished body and burns along with it. Separately, Giles and Jenny enjoy a first date and make plans for a second, while Angel and Buffy walk to his home, holding hands. Buffy and a fellow student, Sheila, are tasked with helping out on the upcoming parent-teacher evening. Two vampires, Spike and Drusilla, who is currently ill, arrive in Sunnydale, and meet The Anointed One. Spike offers to deal with Buffy. At The Bronze, Spike introduces himself to Buffy and promises to kill her. Spike takes Sheila to Drusilla, who turns Sheila into a vampire. Angel reveals that he knows Spike from his past life as Angelus, and Giles learns that Spike has previously killed two Slayers. At the parent-teacher evening, Spike, Sheila, and several other vampires attack the attendees, including Buffy's mother Joyce and Principal Snyder. Buffy locks the adults in a room for safety before facing the vampires. Angel arrives, pretending to be Angelus, but Spike sees through the ruse. Angel and Xander retreat. Sheila joins Buffy, and attempts to attack her, but Giles warns Buffy in time. Spike defeats Buffy, but before he can kill her, Joyce attacks him, and he leaves. Snyder covers up the incident as gang-related. The Anointed One attempts to extract penance from Spike, but Spike forces him into sunlight, killing him. Spike declares that there should be "more fun" around Sunnydale from now on. At a museum, a mummified Incan princess is revived after sucking the life force from a student who broke her seal of protection. Buffy and her friends notice that the student is missing, and go to the museum, finding his corpse in place of the mummy's. The mummy kills an exchange student who was due to meet Buffy, and takes his place, calling herself Ampata. Xander is smitten with Ampata, and the two start a relationship. Ampata asks Giles to destroy the seal. A man later revealed to be the princess's bodyguard attacks Ampata on several occasions, but she eventually kills him. Ampata tells Buffy the story of how the Incan girl was sacrificed to save her people, a story Buffy sympathizes with as the Slayer. Xander and Ampata go to a dance together. At the dance, the guitarist, Oz, notices Willow. Buffy and Giles find the real exchange student's body, and realize that Ampata is the mummy. Ampata kisses Xander, but pushes him away before sucking his life force. Giles tries to repair the seal, but Ampata stops him. In the ensuing fight, Ampata tries to restore herself fully by kissing Xander, but wastes away. A girl attempts to escape a frat party, but is recaptured. Buffy and Giles are pleased at the apparent lack of activity around the Hellmouth. Giles hopes to use the time to train, but Buffy is reluctant. Buffy meets Angel, and they discuss dating, but Angel is reluctant and Buffy leaves angrily. Buffy chooses to go with Cordelia to a frat party. Xander also attends the party, but is recognized as a gate crasher and forced to dress as a girl. At the party, the pair are drugged and chained up in the basement along with the girl captured earlier. The frat boys are in fact members of a cult worshiping Machida, a reptile demon, to whom the girls are offered as a sacrifice. Giles, Willow, and Angel realize the danger Buffy is in. Cordelia is chosen as the first sacrifice, but Buffy distracts Machida, breaks free of her chains and kills the demon, while Giles, Willow, Xander, and Angel arrive and subdue the rest of the party. The frat boys are all arrested and the cult collapses. Giles promises to push Buffy less hard in future. Angel asks to have coffee with Buffy. Buffy slays a vampire while another vampire records the fight. Spike studies the footage. Later, Buffy goes to The Bronze to meet Angel, but leaves after seeing him with Cordelia. Eager to learn more about Angel's past, Willow and Buffy sneak into Giles' office and retrieve a diary. In preparation for Halloween, Buffy buys a dress from a man, Ethan Rayne, who performs an incantation turning everybody who bought their costume from him into a real version of their costume. Willow becomes a ghost and Xander a soldier, while Buffy forgets she is the Slayer. The three retreat to Buffy's house along with Cordelia. In the chaos, Spike and several vampires emerge. Willow leaves to get Giles, while Angel arrives to help. Angel repels a vampire, but Buffy, scared, runs outside. Willow and Giles visit Ethan's shop, and Giles and Ethan recognize each other. Spike finds Buffy and attacks her. Giles breaks the spell in time for Buffy to remember her true self and defeat Spike, who retreats. Angel and Buffy meet afterwards, and, after a short conversation, they kiss. Giles finds a note from Ethan, who promises to return. Angel runs into Drusilla and warns her to leave town. Buffy sees the two together. Billy "Ford" Fordham, a student who knew Buffy at LA, arrives, claiming to have transferred to Sunnydale, and joins Buffy and her friends. Buffy asks Angel about the previous night, but he lies about it, prompting Buffy to leave. Ford reveals that he knows Buffy is the Slayer. Angel and Willow discover that Ford has not in fact transferred to Sunnydale, and that Ford and his friends admire vampires. Buffy and Ford meet two vampires. Buffy kills one, but Ford lets the other go, telling Buffy that he killed it. Later, Buffy sees the same vampire fleeing the library, and realizes that Ford lied to her. Ford meets with Spike and offers to deliver Buffy to him in exchange for becoming a vampire. Buffy confronts Angel, who reveals that he turned Drusilla into a vampire. Buffy visits Ford and his friends, who lock her in with them. Spike and several vampires attack. Buffy captures Drusilla, forcing Spike to call off the attack. She locks them in with Ford, who is transformed into a vampire. Buffy kills Ford shortly after he rises from his grave. A man looking for Giles is strangled to death by a woman, Dierdre, who melts and dies. Police, linking the deaths to Giles, take him to the morgue. He recognizes the man as Philip, whom he knew in London, along with a tattoo that Giles also has. Buffy and Angel fight vampires at the hospital. Buffy, who expected Giles there, visits him afterwards, finding him disheveled. Giles learns that another old friend from the same group is also dead. Buffy, investigating, finds Ethan and learns that he knows Giles. Philip, still dead, arrives and attacks. Buffy traps Philip, who melts away. Some of the liquid touches Jenny. Willow discovers that the tattoo is the Mark of Eyghon, a demon who can pass between bodies. A possessed Jenny attacks Giles, but Buffy stops her, although Jenny escapes. Giles reveals that he and some friends used Eyghon like a drug, but lost control of the demon. Ethan, who also has the mark, captures Buffy and tattoos her, erasing his own. Jenny arrives, fully possessed, and attacks Buffy and Giles. Angel arrives and attacks Jenny. Eyghon passes to Angel, but Angel's vampire form defeats Eyghon and expels the demon. Seeking a cure for Drusilla's illness, Spike tries to read a book stolen from Giles, but learns that it is in code. Angel visits Buffy, warning her of impending danger and arranging a date. A vampire, seen by Buffy, steals the code key from a mausoleum and escapes. Seeking to kill Buffy before she can interfere, Spike calls on an order of assassins. Willow and Oz are recruited by a software company, meeting for the first time. Buffy goes to meet Angel, but is attacked. She and Angel kill the assassin. Angel recognizes the assassin's symbol and asks Buffy to hide. As they kiss goodbye, Kendra, another Slayer, watches from a distance. Giles also warns Buffy that there may be more assassins after her, including shapeshifters, making Buffy paranoid. She retreats to Angel's house. Angel learns from Willy, a bar owner, that Spike is behind the assassins, but Kendra captures and imprisons him. Cordelia and Xander search for Buffy at her house, and are visited by an assassin made from hundreds of worm-like creatures. Kendra finds Buffy and they fight, before Kendra introduces herself as a Slayer. Buffy and Kendra, who became a Slayer after Buffy's death the previous year, break off their fight and agree to work together. Willy finds Angel and takes him to Spike, who in turn presents him to Drusilla. At Buffy's house, the worm assassin attacks Xander and Cordelia; they hide in the basement. Xander and Cordelia, still trapped, argue and insult each other, but then suddenly kiss, before attempting to escape. At the careers fair, an assassin posing as a policewoman shoots at Buffy, hitting Oz after he jumps in front of Willow. Buffy and Kendra fight her off. Giles discovers that Drusilla can use Angel in a ritual to cure her. While preparing to rescue Angel, Kendra and Buffy talk about their different approaches to the life of a Slayer. After interrogating Willy, Buffy rushes to Angel's aid against Kendra's advice, and is immediately captured. Spike begins the ritual, and the assassins bring Buffy to Spike. Kendra arrives, joined by Willow, Xander, Giles, and Cordelia, and the group fight the vampires and assassins, killing several and rescuing Angel. Xander and Cordelia begin a relationship. Drusilla, now restored to full health, pulls an injured Spike from the wreckage. Buffy returns home to find Joyce kissing a man, Ted. Buffy is perturbed at the thought of her mother dating, but Angel persuades her to give Ted a chance. At a minigolf outing, Ted gets angry at Buffy and threatens her, before reverting to normal upon seeing Joyce. Joyce does not believe Buffy's account of the incident. After another argument, Buffy comes home to find Ted in her bedroom. Ted confronts her about being a Slayer, and takes her diary. Buffy tries to stop him, but Ted hits her, and the two fight. Buffy kicks Ted down the stairs, and he dies. Buffy is horrified, although police treat the death as accidental. Xander, Willow, and Cordelia investigate Ted and discover that he has had several previous marriages. Buffy, in her room and distraught, is surprised by Ted, who attacks her. Buffy stabs him, revealing that he is an android, but is overpowered. At Ted's house, Xander finds the bodies of his four previous wives. Ted meets Joyce, lying that he was only unconscious, but some damage causes Ted to malfunction and act aggressively towards Joyce. Buffy destroys Ted soon afterwards. Buffy rescues a woman from a vampire, Lyle, who escapes. At health class, the teacher, Mr. Whitmore, assigns everybody an egg to look after. Buffy's egg hatches at night, inserting a tendril into Buffy's ear while she is asleep. Buffy wakes up, ill, but the egg is back to normal. The following night, Mr. Whitmore attacks a security guard who has found a large hole in the basement. Buffy's egg hatches soon after, revealing a creature that attempts to attach itself to Buffy. Buffy kills the creature and takes it to school to study. Willow and Cordelia, under the creatures' control, knock Buffy and Xander unconscious and go the basement, joined by several students. Giles places a creature on Joyce's back and they too go to the basement, digging up the floor to reveal the mother creature. Buffy and Xander follow another possessed student to the basement. Lyle and his brother Tector attack Buffy, and all three fight the possessed students. The mother creature swallows Tector and Buffy, but, while inside the creature, she kills it, freeing everybody from possession. Lyle flees. The incident is covered up as a gas leak. Buffy has a nightmare in which Drusilla kills Angel in front of her. Fearing for Angel, she visits his apartment, but Angel assures her that everything is fine. Oz and Willow arrange their first date at Buffy's surprise birthday party the following night. Jenny's Romani uncle visits and warns her that Angel is becoming happy due to his relationship with Buffy, and the curse placed on him is in danger of lifting. Jenny takes Buffy to the Bronze for the party, but Buffy fights two vampires just outside. Jenny finds arm, and the group realize that Drusilla and Spike are attempting to reassemble an ancient demon, Judge, who cannot be killed by a "forged" weapon. Jenny asks Angel to take the arm far away. Vampires attack Angel and Buffy at the dock and recover the arm. Buffy and Angel sneak into Drusilla's party, discover that Judge has been restored, and are captured. They fight their way out and retreat to Angel's apartment. After recovering, they confess their love for each other, and fall asleep together. Angel wakes up later, in pain and screaming Buffy's name. Buffy wakes to find Angel gone. Outside, Angel reverts to his vampire form, Angelus, after the curse restoring his soul is lifted, and he immediately kills a woman. Angelus joins Spike and Drusilla and plots Buffy's death. Willow comes across Xander and Cordelia kissing, and she leaves angrily. Buffy visits Angelus's apartment, and while disguised as Angel he mocks her. Angelus visits the School and attacks Willow, leaving after Buffy and Jenny ward him off. Buffy leaves, heartbroken, but has a dream featuring Angel and Jenny and realizes that Jenny has information about Angel. Confronting Jenny, she reveals her Romani heritage and her knowledge of Angelus's curse. Xander and Cordelia visit a nearby army base to steal a rocket launcher. Angelus kills Jenny's uncle and takes Judge to the mall, where he attacks everybody present. Armed with the rocket launcher, which creates its own weapons, Buffy shoots and kills Judge. The gang recover the pieces of his body, planning to keep them separate, while Angelus and Buffy fight outside. Buffy overpowers Angelus, but cannot bring herself to kill him. Giles tries to console Buffy afterwards. A werewolf attacks Xander and Cordelia at night, while they are making out. They drive away and tell the others, including Oz. Giles warns that the werewolf will be active for three nights. Buffy investigates the following night and is caught in a trap set by Cain, a werewolf hunter, looking to sell the werewolf's pelt. Later, Buffy tracks the werewolf to The Bronze, but it escapes. The werewolf stumbles upon Angelus, who retreats, leaving his latest victim, Theresa. The following morning, the werewolf, in fact Oz, reverts to his human form. Xander accuses another student, Larry, of being the werewolf, but he reveals instead that he is gay. Theresa, now a vampire, attacks Buffy on Angelus' orders, but Xander kills her. Willow visits Oz's home and learns that he is the werewolf. She tells Buffy and Giles, and they track Oz down, as does Cain, who uses bait to lure Oz. Buffy stops Cain from shooting Oz, and Willow shoots him with a tranquilizer. Buffy threatens Cain out of town. Willow and Oz agree to continue seeing each other despite his nature. On Valentine's Day, Cordelia breaks up with Xander after being shunned by her friends. Buffy receives a "gift" of roses from Angelus, along with a warning that he has more planned. Xander asks Amy, whose mother was a witch, to cast a love spell on Cordelia. However, the spell ends up affecting every woman in Sunnydale apart from Cordelia, including Buffy, Amy, and Willow, who hit on Xander in turn. Giles seeks a solution, while Amy and Buffy fight over Xander, Amy turning Buffy into a rat. Xander saves Cordelia from an attack by several girls, angry at her for breaking up with Xander. They retreat to Buffy's house, where Joyce also flirts with Xander, before Angelus attacks. However, Drusilla, also affected by the spell, stops Angelus's attack. Xander and Cordelia escape them and the growing mob. Amy and Giles reverse the spells affecting Buffy and the rest of the town. Xander and Cordelia reconcile after she decides not to bow to her friends' wishes. Angelus visits Buffy's room at night, leaving a picture of her sleeping. Angelus later visits Willow's house and kills her pet fish. Buffy fears that Angelus will target Joyce next, and seeks advice from Giles on how to stop Angelus from being able to enter their homes. Angelus meets Joyce and reveals that he and Buffy had sex. Buffy and Willow cast the spell to keep Angelus out of Buffy's house before he can break in again. Jenny seeks to restore the curse that had given Angelus back his soul, and translates the ancient ritual. However, Drusilla senses her plan, and warns Angelus, who breaks into the school and destroys Jenny's computer, before killing her. Giles returns home to find a rose left by Angelus. Thinking it was left by Jenny, he goes upstairs to find her dead body. Angelus watches through the window when Buffy and Willow receive the news of Jenny's death. Enraged, Giles attacks Angelus's and Spike's lair, setting it on fire. Angelus overpowers Giles, but Buffy arrives and fights Angelus. Angelus escapes when Buffy is forced to rescue Giles from the fire. Buffy falls ill from flu, collapsing during a fight with Angelus, and is taken to hospital. In an apparent dream, she sees a boy outside her room, followed by a demonic figure. When Buffy wakes, she overhears a conversation about experimental treatments, and finds the boy, Ryan, who warns her that "Death" visits the hospital regularly. She enlists the help of her friends to investigate. They learn that Dr. Backer, who works at the hospital, has a history of controversial experimentation on children. Later, Buffy watches Dr. Backer attacked and killed by the demon, although she can no longer see it. Cordelia and Giles learn that the demon is called Kindestod (German for "the child's death"), while Buffy and Willow learn that Dr. Backer's treatment was working on the children. Realizing that Kindestod is only visible to the sick, Buffy re-infects herself. She finds all the children gone, and sees Kindestod heading to the basement. Kindestod attacks Ryan there, but Buffy intervenes while Xander rescues the children. After a fight, Buffy breaks Kindestod's neck. Buffy intervenes to stop a male student from shooting a female student, but immediately afterwards the gun disappears and the two have no memory of their argument. Later in class, Buffy has a daydream about a relationship between a teacher, Grace, and her student James. Later, Giles overhears a janitor argue with and shoot another teacher. Willow learns that James shot Grace, before killing himself, after she tried to end their affair. In the cafeteria later, all the food turns into snakes. Snyder and the police chief discuss the incident, revealing that they both know about the Hellmouth. Willow, Buffy, Xander, and Cordelia attempt an exorcism, but their attempt is foiled and a swarm of wasps invades the school, forcing the group out. Buffy returns to the school, now possessed by James' spirit. Angelus arrives, but is soon also possessed by Grace's spirit, and they re-enact the last night of James' and Grace's life. Buffy shoots Angelus, and goes to the music room. About to shoot herself, she is joined by Angelus, and Grace's and James' spirits reconcile. Later, Angelus and Drusilla go out to feed, and Spike gets up from his wheelchair. A member of the school's swim team is found dead. Soon after, Xander hears another member screaming from the cafeteria, and finds his skin along with a fish-like monster. Buffy tails Gage, a third member of the team, fearing that he is the next target. Gage later runs into Angelus, who attacks him. Buffy intervenes, noticing that Angelus spat out Gage's blood rather than drinking it. Xander joins the swim team in order to investigate, learning that the team are being given steroids in the sauna. In the changing rooms, the monster attacks Gage. Buffy again intervenes, before watching Gage turning into an identical monster. Swim Coach Marin and Nurse Greenliegh discuss the crisis, revealing that they worked together to infuse the team with fish DNA. Greenliegh attempts to end the experiment, but Marin pushes her into the sewers, where she is killed by the monsters. Buffy confronts Marin, but he forces her at gunpoint into the sewers as well. She fights off the monsters, before Xander saves her. Marin falls into the sewers and is eaten. Giles rounds up Xander and the remaining team members and manages to cure them. Giles investigates an ancient stone block found at the museum. Willow and Buffy find a floppy disk belonging to Jenny, and learn that it has a copy of the curse that can restore Angelus's soul. Drusilla and Angelus break into the museum to steal the block, which holds the demon Acathla, who has the ability to suck the entire world into hell. Kendra arrives, having been warned by her Watcher about Acathla's impending resurrection, bringing with her an enchanted sword that can help defeat the demon. Angelus attempts, but fails, to awaken Acathla. Angelus sends a messenger to summon Buffy to the cemetery. Kendra stays behind to protect the others, while Buffy meets and fights with Angelus. Willow and Giles attempt to perform the curse to restore Angelus's soul, but are interrupted by several vampires, including Drusilla, who hypnotizes then kills Kendra and kidnaps Giles. Buffy, realizing the fight was a distraction, rushes back to the school, finding Kendra's body and a comatose Willow. Police find Buffy with Kendra's dead body and attempt to arrest her, but she escapes. Returning home, she finds Whistler, who says that Angelus was supposed to defeat Agathla. Buffy later meets Spike, who offers to help stop Angelus, as he has no desire to see the world end. Buffy and Spike return to her home, meeting Joyce, and Buffy reveals to Joyce her role as Slayer. At Willow's bedside, Xander confesses his love for her. Willow wakes up soon after, calling for Oz. She decides to try again to perform the curse to restore Angelus's soul. Buffy meets Snyder, who expels her. Drusilla hypnotizes Giles, appearing to him as Jenny. He reveals that Angelus's blood is the key to awakening Acathla. Whistler tells Buffy that only Angel's blood can defeat Acathla. Buffy and Spike team up to stop Angelus before he can complete the ritual. Drusilla joins Angelus's side in the ensuing fight. Willow taps into newfound magical awareness to complete the curse, restoring Angelus's soul. Acathla begins to awake, and Buffy is forced to stab Angel, sending him and the demon to hell. Spike takes Drusilla away from Sunnydale, while Buffy also leaves.
season 3 -
Willow, Oz, Xander, and Cordelia attempt to cover Buffy's Slayer responsibilities, with mixed results. Grieving over Angel, Buffy has exiled herself to Los Angeles, working at a diner under the name "Anne". Buffy meets Lily, a member of ‘the Lonely Ones’, a group who romanticized vampires and were saved by Buffy. After Lily’s boyfriend Rickie goes missing, Buffy reluctantly agrees to help. Buffy saves an old man who walks into traffic, but he dies soon after. Buffy realizes that he is Rickie, decades older than the previous day. Lily meets the owner of a homeless shelter, who convinces her that Rickie is there. Buffy discovers that a blood bank has been providing names of homeless people to the shelter, and goes to investigate, only to be thrown, along with Lily, through a portal into a demonic factory where the missing people are slaves. As time passes faster in the factory, the slaves are returned to their own world when they are no longer useful, where only a single day has passed. Announcing herself as the Slayer, Buffy leads an uprising against the demons. The portal closes behind the freed slaves. Buffy allows Lily to assume her identity as "Anne", and returns to Sunnydale. Principal Snyder refuses to allow Buffy’s return to Sunnydale High, despite Buffy being exonerated of Kendra’s murder. Joyce and Buffy's friends find it difficult to welcome Buffy back to Sunnydale. Joyce brings home a Nigerian mask, which she hangs in her bedroom, and invites Buffy's friends over for a dinner party to celebrate her return. Buffy's friends, wishing to avoid talking to Buffy about their feelings of abandonment, invite Oz’s band. Meanwhile, a dead cat and several dead people return to life. Investigating, Giles discovers that Joyce’s mask carries the spirit of a demon. Racing to warn Buffy, Giles witnesses an army of the dead heading for the Summers house. Buffy overhears her mother admitting it is difficult to deal with Buffy’s return. Feeling betrayed, Buffy makes plans to leave again. Joyce and Buffy's friends confront Buffy over her abandonment. The zombies arrive and attempt to claim the mask, but Buffy destroys it and the zombies vanish. Giles threatens Snyder to allow Buffy to return to school. Buffy reconciles with Willow, who tells Buffy she has begun to study witchcraft. Two vampires, Mr. Trick and Kakistos, arrive in Sunnydale. Buffy is readmitted to school by a reluctant Snyder. At The Bronze, Buffy sees a young woman leaving with a vampire. Fearing for her life, she follows them, but watches the woman kill the vampire, introducing herself as the Slayer Faith. Faith's arrival causes tension, as she appears more enthusiastic about her role than Buffy, and flirts with Scott Hope, Buffy's potential love interest. Scott asks Buffy on a date. She initially accepts, but is startled after he gives her a ring similar to one Angel gave her. Giles tells Buffy that Faith's Watcher is dead. Buffy goes to warn Faith, but she already knows, having come to Sunnydale to escape from Kakistos. Kakistos leads an attack on the pair. Mr. Trick leaves the fight halfway through, while Faith and Buffy kill Kakistos. In the library later, Buffy reveals to Willow and Giles that Angel's soul was restored just before she had to kill him. Faith stays in Sunnydale. Buffy agrees to go on a date with Scott. She abandons a ring in the mansion where Angel had died. Moments after she leaves, Angel reappears. Giles reveals that a student was mauled to death overnight. Oz is a prime suspect, as a window to Oz's cage was open. Willow collects a hair sample from the victim, hoping to determine who killed him, but the test is inconclusive. That night, Buffy is attacked by a rabid Angel. She subdues him and chains him up. Buffy visits the school counselor, but finds him dead. Pete loses his temper with girlfriend Debbie over a bottle with a green liquid inside. He transforms into a monster and attacks Debbie, but relents, blaming her for angering him. Oz notes that all victims are connected to Debbie. Now suspecting Pete, Buffy and Willow approach her, but Debbie, who has been physically and psychologically abused, blames herself for Pete's anger. Pete visits Oz, transforms into a monster, and attacks. Oz is overpowered until he turns into a werewolf, turning the tables. Debbie stops Buffy from stunning Pete, who escapes. Later, Pete kills Debbie and overpowers Buffy. On the verge of killing her, Angel, who has broken free, intervenes and saves her, and reveals that he remembers her. Buffy keeps Angel's return a secret. Buffy nurses Angel back to health in secret. Scott breaks up with Buffy, telling her that she seems too distracted. Buffy, angry that Cordelia did not tell her about yearbook photographs, decides to compete with Cordelia for the title of Homecoming Queen. Preparing for the dance, Willow and Xander flirt with each other and share a kiss, despite their ongoing relationships. Spies, working for Mr. Trick, overhear Buffy saying that she and Faith will ride together in a limo to the Homecoming dance. Mr. Trick sends several vampires to kill the two Slayers. In an attempt to restore their friendship, Willow arranges for Cordelia to take Faith's place in the limo. The driver takes them to a clearing with a TV, which plays a recording of Mr. Trick announcing the Slayer hunt. Buffy and Cordelia trap one vampire, then retreat to a cabin for shelter. They manage to contact Giles and escape. At the library, Cordelia kills one vampire and scares off another. Buffy tricks two other assailants into shooting each other dead. Mr. Trick visits the Mayor, who recruits him to help control the town's youth. Buffy struggles to manage her time between her friends, Giles, Joyce, and Angel, eventually caught by Joyce and Giles in a lie about her evening. Snyder tasks Buffy with selling chocolate bars to raise money for the band. The chocolate proves extremely addictive, and causes the adults to act increasingly immaturely. Buffy and Willow find The Bronze packed with adults partying. Buffy, realizing that the chocolate is responsible, decides to visit the factory. On her way there, she finds Giles and Joyce kissing in the street. Buffy breaks into the factory, finding it empty apart from Ethan, who eventually reveals that he is working for Mr. Trick and a demon called Lurconis. Giles remembers that Lurconis hides in the sewers. They arrive in time to stop Trick, the Mayor, and several vampires from completing the ritual to summon Lurconis and feed him a tribute of four babies, although the Mayor escapes before being noticed. Trick also escapes, and Buffy sets Lurconis on fire. The adults soon return to normal. The Mayor reprimands Trick for allowing the demon to die. Gwendolyn Post arrives, claiming to be Faith's new watcher. She warns that a demon is seeking the Glove of Myhnegon, a powerful gauntlet. While searching for the Glove, Xander sees Angel and Buffy together. Angel shows Buffy the Glove. Xander rushes to tell Giles of Angel's return, finding him with Gwendolyn. Giles and the others confront Buffy later, with Giles angry that Buffy concealed Angel's return. Gwendolyn visits Faith, promising to be a strict watcher and disparaging Giles's methods. Xander tells Faith that Angel is alive and has the Glove, and Faith decides to slay Angel. Giles tells Gwendolyn that he knows how to destroy the glove, but Gwendolyn knocks him out. Xander and Faith find Giles hurt. Faith assumes that Angel was responsible, and rushes to kill him. Gwendolyn and Faith arrive separately first. Faith defeats Angel, but Buffy stops her from killing him. Faith and Buffy fight. Gwendolyn recovers the glove and puts it on, using it to summon lightning and attack the others. Buffy manages to kill Gwendolyn after Faith acts as a distraction. The group reconcile and forgive Angel, but Faith feels unable to trust anyone after Gwendolyn's betrayal. Buffy receives her SAT scores and ponders a future outside Sunnydale. Willow goes to a magic shop, looking for ingredients for an anti-love spell to end her and Xander's mutual attraction. Spike, who has returned to Sunnydale, kidnaps Willow and Xander and forces Willow to cast a love spell on Drusilla, who has left him. Spike visits Buffy's home and talks to Joyce. Buffy and Angel intervene and attack him, but he refuses to tell them where Willow is. They agree to cooperate with him while he seeks supplies for the spell. Fearing they are about to die, Xander and Willow kiss just as Oz and Cordelia find them. Horrified, Cordelia runs off but is impaled on rebar when some stairs collapse under her. Several vampires attack Spike, Angel, and Buffy, but they eventually repel their attackers. Spike decides to win Drusilla back without using a spell, and leaves. Xander visits Cordelia, who is recovering in hospital, but she tells him to stay away from her. Buffy tells Angel that she cannot continue seeing him unless Angel says he does not love her, which he cannot bring himself to do. Willow attempts to repair things with Oz, but he tells her to leave him alone. Cordelia, heartbroken over Xander, meets Anya, who tries to help her move on. Anya gives Cordelia a necklace. After Cordelia says that she wishes Buffy had never come to Sunnydale, Anya turns into a demon, then vanishes, and Cordelia is transported to an alternative reality. Soon after, Cordelia learns that Sunnydale is overrun by vampires, as The Master has taken over Sunnydale. Cordelia tries to tell Giles, but Willow and Xander, now vampires, kill her. Giles recovers her necklace, and deduces that it belongs to Anyanka and that reality can be restored if Anyanka's power center is destroyed. Buffy, who was based in Cleveland, arrives after Giles attempts to contact her. Buffy goes to the Bronze, finding Angel chained up. She agrees to let him help her, and they go to a factory where The Master has automated blood extraction. In the ensuing fight, Angel, Willow, Xander, and Buffy are killed. Giles summons Anyanka, and destroys her amulet, returning reality to the moment that Cordelia expressed her wish. Anya is perplexed at being unable to grant wishes. Oz and Willow make amends and get back together, although Oz decides to take things slowly. Buffy, at Joyce's request, invites Faith over for Christmas, but she refuses. Angel visits Giles, asking for help about vivid dreams of his past crimes. Angel sees a vision of Jenny Calendar, and runs out, panicked. Soon after, Buffy tells Giles that she was in Angel's dream, and they begin to investigate. Angel's dreams intensify, and tell him that his pain will end if he kills Buffy. Giles suggests that the First Evil is the cause of Angel's visions. Faith visits Buffy's home after all, but Angel arrives and warns Buffy to stay away from him, leaving before he loses control. Buffy tracks down The First Evil, who tells Buffy that she cannot defeat it, and that Angel will be dead by sunrise. Buffy finds Angel, who refuses to leave the hilltop, having chosen to kill himself. However, a snowfall arrives, protecting Sunnydale from the sun, saving Angel's life. Angel and Buffy walk through the town hand-in-hand. Joyce joins Buffy on a night of Slaying and finds two dead children. Giles theorizes that the children were victims of an occult sacrifice. Joyce speaks out in front of the whole town against monsters, witches, and Slayers. Willow and Amy Madison, who have started a coven, soon become suspects after police search their lockers and find material related to witchcraft. Joyce forbids Buffy from seeing Willow again, and suggests that Buffy has not helped Sunnydale despite her Slaying. After Buffy leaves, the two children appear to Joyce in a vision. Realizing that the children have no parents or identity, Buffy and her friends find records of the same children dying every 50 years since 1649. Buffy and Giles rush to tell Buffy, but Joyce knocks them out on the children's instructions. Willow, Buffy, and Amy are tied to stakes at the city hall. Cordelia revives Giles while Joyce starts a fire at Buffy's feet. Amy escapes by transforming into a rat, while Cordelia and Giles arrive in time to douse the fire. Giles performs a spell that reveals the demon behind the children, and Buffy kills it. Buffy and Willow attempt, but fail, to restore Amy's human form. Buffy loses her strength during a fight with a vampire and is nearly killed. During a training session, Giles hypnotizes and drugs Buffy. Meanwhile, the head watcher, Quentin Travers, prepares a test for Buffy's 18th birthday, including a captive drug-addicted vampire, Kralik. Kralik escapes, turning one of Quentin's assistants, Blair, into a vampire and killing the other. Out at night, Buffy runs into Kralik and Blair. Without her powers, she is forced to run, but Giles rescues her. Giles confesses that he drugged her on the instructions of the Watchers' Council. Buffy leaves with Cordelia, furious at Giles. She returns home to find a message from Kralik, who has kidnapped Joyce. Buffy goes to find Joyce, managing to trap Blair and knock him unconscious, and evades Kralik. Buffy steals Kralik's pills and finds Joyce, but Kralik catches up to her. He swallows the pills, but dies after drinking from a glass that Buffy filled with holy water. Quentin congratulates Buffy on passing the test, but removes Giles as Buffy's watcher for assisting her. Buffy allows Giles to tend her wounds, and the pair await a new watcher. Buffy, Faith, Willow, and Giles work together to defeat several demons that Giles later identifies as members of the Sisterhood of Jhe, who are intent on opening the Hellmouth. Xander, feeling increasingly insecure about his role in the group, buys a car in the hope it will make him useful, but accidentally rear-ends school bully Jack. Jack threatens Xander with a knife, but Xander covers for Jack when police arrive, gaining his respect. Jack takes Xander to the cemetery, where they resurrect Jack's dead friends. Jack, also dead, tries to initiate Xander into the group, but he flees. Driving away, Xander hits a member of the Sisterhood, saving Faith. They retreat to her motel, where Faith seduces him. After having sex, Faith kicks Xander out. Xander realizes that Jack and his friends have built a bomb. With Buffy, Giles, and the rest of his friends too busy, Xander tracks down the group himself. After outwitting them, Xander forces Jack to defuse the bomb, before Oz kills Jack. Meanwhile, Buffy, Faith, Angel, Willow, and Giles manage to close the Hellmouth and stop the Sisterhood in a largely off-screen struggle. Buffy and Faith's new Watcher, Wesley, tasks Buffy with finding an amulet belonging to the demon Balthazar. Joined by Faith, they defeat the vampires and recover the amulet despite being outnumbered. Faith interrupts a class test to take Buffy to another vampire nest, and after a successful hunt the two go out dancing together. Angel warns Buffy and Wesley that Balthazar has returned. Buffy gives Angel the amulet for safekeeping. Buffy and Faith track down Balthazar, and break into a nearby shop to arm themselves. They are arrested, but break out of the police car, injuring the officers in the process. The following night, Faith and Buffy attack several more vampires, but Faith mistakes Deputy Mayor Allan for a vampire and kills him. Other vampires kidnap Wesley and Giles. Balthazar interrogates them. Wesley is willing to give up the amulet, but does not know Angel's name. Angel himself shows up, along with Buffy. They free Giles and Wesley and defeat the vampires and Balthazar. Balthazar warns Buffy that a greater enemy is rising. Later, the Mayor performs a ritual to make himself invincible. Buffy visits faith, who acts unconcerned about Allan's death. Divers recover Allan's body in the river, where Faith had dumped it. Wesley asks Buffy and Faith to investigate his murder. Buffy confesses to Willow, who advises her to seek Giles. Faith, however, has already told Giles that Buffy killed Allan. Giles orders Buffy into his office, but tells Buffy that he knows Faith has lied. Wesley overhears their conversation and contacts the Watchers' Council. Xander offers to help, revealing that he has slept with Faith, upsetting Willow. Xander visits Faith , but she overpowers and starts to strangle him. Angel rescues Xander and chains Faith up, warning Buffy that Faith may have developed a taste for killing. Watchers led by Wesley arrive, subduing Angel and taking Faith away for judgment. Faith escapes, however. Buffy tracks down Faith, but fails to talk her down, and Buffy hits Faith in anger. They are interrupted by vampires led by Mr. Trick. Faith fights them off, and kills Mr. Trick before he can kill Buffy. Buffy expresses a hope to Giles that Faith may yet be redeemed, but Faith visits the Mayor and offers to replace Mr. Trick. Willow continues to investigate the Mayor. Faith alerts him of the attempt, and the Mayor tells Faith that he plans to have Willow killed. Anya, desperate to regain her powers as a vengeance demon, asks Willow to help summon her amulet. The spell goes wrong, calling Willow's vampire form to Sunnydale. At the Bronze, Xander and Buffy run into Vampire Willow, and are horrified when she reveals her vampire face. Other vampires attack Vampire Willow, but she easily overpowers and recruits them. The real Willow arrives, much to her friends' relief and puzzlement. Oz and Angel watch Vampire Willow lead an attack on the Bronze. Anya offers to help Vampire Willow return to her world. Buffy leads an attempt to retake the Bronze, leaving Willow behind. Vampire Willow attacks real Willow, but Willow stuns her vampire form. Buffy decides to use real Willow as a decoy to persuade the vampires to leave the Bronze. Cordelia unwittingly frees Vampire Willow, but Wesley saves Cordelia. Anya eventually sees through the subterfuge, and Buffy and Angel fight the vampires. Working with Anya, they return Vampire Willow to her reality, where she is immediately killed. Buffy and Faith encounter a demon, claiming to have Books of Ascension for the Mayor and offering to sell them. Faith tracks the demon down on the Mayor's orders and kills it, recovering the Books. She visits Angel, confessing to a murder and acting distressed. Faith tries to seduce Angel, but he rebuffs her. Faith and the Mayor plot to remove Angel's soul, with help from a demon. Faith returns to Angel along with the demon, and they perform a spell in an attempt to remove his soul. The spell appears successful, and after a struggle, Angel and Faith visit the Mayor. Wesley leads Cordelia and others to the Hall of Records, to research on the Mayor. They learn that the Mayor has been alive for almost a century. Angel joins Faith to find Buffy. After bringing her to Angel's mansion, they restrain her. Faith taunts Buffy, moaning about being in her shadow and revealing details about the Mayor's plans for Ascension, and that the Mayor deliberately built Sunnydale on the Hellmouth. Angel reveals that his turn was in fact a sham. Faith escapes. Shaken by their joint deception, Buffy asks Angel to go on a break. Buffy get infected with blood from a slain demon and soon gains the power to hear people's thoughts, with the exception of Angel's. Initially she finds the new ability useful, exploiting it to gain an advantage in class. However, her friends are uncomfortable at Buffy hearing their innermost thoughts, and the voices soon become overwhelming. Buffy overhears one student making a threat against the school before collapsing in the cafeteria. Giles takes Buffy home, while Willow organizes an investigation into the threat. Angel kills a second of the same demon, using its heart with a potion to try and cure Buffy. Willow and Oz track down a suspect, but it turns out that he has no involvement. Cordelia finds a letter from Jonathan, a boy struggling with confidence issues. Buffy tracks him to the clock tower, where he has assembled a rifle and had planned to kill himself. Buffy talks him down. Xander stumbles upon a lunch lady spiking the food with rat poison, and Buffy knocks her unconscious. Jonathan attends counseling and is suspended from school. Buffy asks Wesley to leave Sunnydale after graduation, but Wesley forbids it. Buffy offers to act proactively to stop the Mayor's plans for Ascension. Faith steals the Box of Gavrok at the docks and delivers it to the Mayor. Buffy learns of this, and plans with the others to steal and destroy the Box, over Wesley's objections. The heist is successful, although Faith kidnaps Willow. Buffy and Wesley argue over whether to trade the Box for Willow, Oz settling the matter by smashing a vessel containing the potion needed for the ritual. Willow briefly escapes, levitating a pencil to stake a vampire, and finds the Books of Ascension in the Mayor's office. She steals a few pages before being recaptured. The Mayor arrives at the school to make the exchange, which is interrupted when Snyder arrives with security guards. One of the guards opens the box, and two large beetle-like creatures come out of it, killing the guard. Buffy closes the box before any more can escape. The Mayor leaves with the box. Buffy realizes that she cannot leave Sunnydale as long as evil exists there. Willow agrees to stay to help her and to continue her witchcraft studies. Joyce visits Angel, telling him that he cannot stand in the way of Buffy's future. On patrol together, Angel breaks up with Buffy and says that he plans to leave Sunnydale after the Ascension. Xander runs into Cordelia at a clothes shop. They get into an argument, during which Cordelia reveals that her family is poor now. A monster breaks into the shop and kills a boy wearing a tuxedo. Wesley identifies the beast as a hellhound, and deduce that a student called Tucker plans to use the hellhound to ruin prom night. Buffy offers to stop Tucker so that the rest can enjoy the prom. Xander attends the prom with Anya. Cordelia thanks Xander for paying for her dress, then dances with Wesley. Buffy easily subdues Tucker, but learns that he already released three hellhounds. Buffy manages to kill all three before they interrupt the prom, then changes into her own dress. Buffy is surprised to win the prom award of Class Protector, awarded as thanks from the whole school for her work stopping monsters. Angel arrives in a tuxedo, to dance with Buffy, although he stresses that it does not change things between them. Faith kills Professor Worth on the Mayor's orders, causing Buffy and Giles to investigate. Anya reveals that she has previously seen an Ascension, explaining that the resulting demon will be much stronger than anything the group has faced. The Mayor interrupts the meeting, threatening the group. Giles stabs him, but the Mayor is unharmed. Buffy convinces Joyce to leave town for her own safety. Willow searches desperately for a spell to stop the Ascension, but finds nothing. Oz calms her down with a kiss, and they have sex. Angel and Buffy raid Worth's office, finding some notes which they take to Wesley and Giles, who discover that Worth had found the bones of the demon Olvikan. Faith shoots Angel with an arrow laced with a toxin deadly to vampires, leaving Angel near death. The Watchers' Council refuses to help Angel, leading Buffy to quit the Council. Willow learns that a cure requiring the blood of a Slayer exists. The Mayor eats some insects from the Box of Gavrok, part of his preparation for the Ascension. Buffy finds Faith at her apartment and the two fight. Buffy stabs Faith, but she jumps off into a passing truck. Buffy visits Angel and forces him to drink her blood, allowing Angel to recover. When he comes to he takes Buffy, now near death herself, to hospital. Nearby, the Mayor is informed that Faith is alive but in a coma from which she may never recover. The Mayor tries to suffocate Buffy, but Angel stops him. Buffy has a dream in which Faith tells her that even the Mayor has human weaknesses. Buffy wakes up, recovered, and organizes a plan with her friends for stopping the Mayor. Xander and Willow recruit several school students to join their plan. The graduation ceremony begins, and during his speech the Mayor's Ascension begins, and he transforms into Olvikan. The students reveal that they are all armed, and begin an attack. Olvikan kills Snyder and several other students. Buffy taunts Olvikan about Faith, drawing him away from the remaining students towards the library, where Giles detonates a bomb, destroying the demon and the school. In the aftermath, Wesley returns to England, and Angel leaves without saying goodbye to Buffy, although they share a final look at each other from a distance.
season 4 -
Buffy and Willow arrive at UC Sunnydale. Buffy struggles to settle in, having an awkward encounter with fellow student Riley Finn, finding her new roommate Kathy hard to live with, and being humiliated when a professor ejects her from class. That night, Buffy meets fellow freshman Eddie, and they soon get along. After Buffy leaves, Eddie is attacked by a gang of vampires, led by Sunday. Missing Eddie at class the next day, Buffy asks Giles for advice. Giles suggests that Buffy is capable of handling the situation herself. The following night, Buffy finds Eddie, now a vampire, and is forced to kill him. Sunday's gang surround and overpower Buffy, although she escapes. Shaken, she flees to her mum Joyce's house, then to the Bronze, where she is startled to see someone who resembles Angel. She runs into Xander, who lifts Buffy's spirits. They track down the vampires. Buffy falls into their room. Sunday again overpowers Buffy, until Sunday breaks Buffy's "Class Protector" trophy. Now riled up and joined by Xander, Oz, and Willow, Buffy turns the tables, killing Sunday. Giles offers to continue to help Buffy in future. A lone surviving vampire is tasered by masked figures. Buffy finds life with roommate Kathy increasingly difficult. On a night patrol, Kathy joins Buffy unexpectedly. Buffy pushes Kathy into a bush to prevent her from seeing a demon, which Buffy then fights off. Two other demons watch on. The following night, Buffy dreams of a demon performing a ritual on her, later learning that Kathy had the same dream. Buffy's friends grow increasingly concerned about Buffy's behavior and hatred towards Kathy. After Buffy gathers toenail clippings and explains that she thinks Kathy is a demon, Willow asks her to go to Giles' house, where he, Oz and Xander tie her up. Buffy soon breaks free and returns to her room, where she and Kathy fight. Buffy inadvertently tears Kathy's face off, revealing a demon underneath. Meanwhile Giles realizes that Buffy was right about Kathy being a demon, and learns that Kathy has stolen parts of Buffy's soul. He performs the ritual to restore it, thwarting Kathy's efforts just as the demons, who are from Kathy's clan and who she was trying to evade to continue enjoying living as a free human college student, arrive and pull Kathy back to their own dimension. Willow moves in as Buffy's roommate. Buffy spends time with Parker, a student she met recently, and Parker asks Buffy out. Harmony, a former Sunnydale High student, now a vampire, attacks Willow. Oz chases her off. Anya visits Xander, asking about the nature of their relationship. Xander encourages her to slow down, although in a later visit Anya strips off soon after arriving, and they have sex. Afterwards, Anya tells Xander she is over him, but storms off when Xander reacts indifferently. Buffy runs into Harmony and her new boyfriend Spike. Buffy and Parker enjoy a date, and they sleep together. Parker promises to call later, but never does. Harmony finds the Gem of Amara in a crypt. Spike takes the Gem from Harmony and abandons her. Buffy sees Parker out with another woman, and realizes that Parker had no interest in a relationship with her. Spike attacks Buffy in broad daylight, impervious to the sun thanks to the Gem. After a long fight, Buffy eventually takes the Gem from Spike, who is forced to retreat. Oz offers to take the ring to Angel in L.A. The closing scene is Harmony, Anya, and Buffy separately wandering the campus at night, near to each other but very alone in their heartbreak. The gang are carving Halloween pumpkins, but worry about Buffy who is too depressed to join in. Buffy goes to Giles' house to discuss patrolling that evening, but is dismayed to find him in costume, with giant sombrero, and giddily enjoying the spooky season. Reluctantly Buffy agrees to join her friends in dressing up for Halloween, but the gang find themselves in a real-life house of horrors at the student party, after the hosts accidentally invoke a fear demon which feeds on their individual fears. Arriving late, Anya is unable to enter the house and realizing something is amiss enlists Giles's help to save Xander. Buffy decides to destroy the incantation symbol before Giles is able to explain that doing so will actually summon the terrifying demon, with an unexpectedly hilarious result. Buffy day-dreams of saving Parker's life with her slaying skills, and him begging forgiveness for the way he treated her. Xander gets a job bartending at the college Pub, enduring a clique of snobby and mean clientele. Buffy ends up drowning her sorrows, drinking with the elitist college boys who like her, but they all begin to act oddly. Xander works out that the bar-manager, seeking revenge after years of bad-mannered arrogance from some of the student patrons, has been spiking their foamy beer with some supernatural mojo, causing the recipients to revert to caveman / woman mentality. Buffy's Parker dream comes true. Oz encounters another werewolf, Veruca, who wants him to stop caging himself and hurt people. Physically attracted to her, Oz locks her in his cage to prevent her from attacking people. Willow finds them in the morning both naked. Heartbroken, she begins a revenge spell but can't go through with it, leaving her vulnerable to wolf Veruca. Oz and Buffy save the day, but Oz determines to leave town for the safety of Willow and others. Spike, who was captured by the commandos, is being held hostage by them in a hi-tech facility underneath the University. Spike escapes and heads to find Buffy, who he assumes is behind this; Riley realizes he has a crush on Buffy. Xander accidentally releases Hus, a Native American vengeance spirit. Angel secretly arrives in Sunnydale to protect Buffy (who is attempting a perfect Thanksgiving) from the spirit. Spike seeks the Scoobies' help. A spell by Willow goes awry, blinding Giles, making Xander a literal demon-magnet, and causing Buffy and Spike to fall in love and get engaged, much to Giles' and the rest of the gang's bemusement. Once Willow realizes her mistake, she sets about reversing it. The Gentlemen steal the voices of the population of Sunnydale, rendering everyone in the town (including the Scooby Gang) unable to speak. Giles studies his books then gives a slide-show on his findings to the Scoobies, with his hand-drawn illustrations. The Scoobies communicate with pens, wipe-boards and amusingly misinterpreted mimes. Giles reveals that the only thing to defeat The Gentleman is a real human scream. Buffy and Riley both go to confront The Gentlemen, finding they have something unexpected in common. This episode is mostly silent (aside from music and ambient sound) from the point The Gentlemen steal Sunnydale's voices. An earthquake occurs in Sunnydale, which signifies the Hellmouth is opening. The gang must return to the remains of Sunnydale High to stop it; Buffy and Riley struggle with adjusting to each other's secrets. Giles, feeling left out, goes out for drinks with Ethan Rayne. He wakes up in the morning as a Fyarl demon, and hires Spike to try help him, with a brief car-stop to comically chase his Campus foe, Professor Walsh. Mistaking him for a Fyarl demon, The Initiative and Buffy hunt him down. When Professor Walsh realizes Buffy is a threat to The Initiative, she decides to kill her by sending her on a dangerous mission. While Riley is being informed of Buffy's death, he sees her massage to Professor Walsh on the surveillance screens. On learning that Walsh has tried to kill Buffy, Riley begins to think seriously of leaving the organization. Buffy discovers The Initiative's secret weapon; Riley becomes unstable due to the death of Professor Walsh and drug withdrawal; Adam reveals some information about himself, while trying to learn about people by investigating their insides. Faith wakes up from her eight-month coma and seeks revenge against Buffy. After failing to attack her, she switches bodies with Buffy using a magical gift left to her by Richard Wilkins III, the now-dead mayor. Buffy (in Faith's body) is abducted by the Council's team, while Faith (in Buffy's body) has ruthless fun at the expense of Buffy. After Faith and Buffy (as each other) rescue a group of people in a church that has been attacked by vampires, they switch their bodies back. Faith begins to feel remorse, and heads to L.A. Jonathan casts a spell to cause all of Sunnydale to believe that he is the titular "superstar". However, the spell comes with a price - it conjures up a monster which endangers the town. When Buffy and Riley rouse a supernatural force at the fraternity party house, they are held hostage by ghost children who were abused by a Christian fundamentalist and now seek revenge. Willow, Tara, and Giles perform a spell to stop the spirits. Oz returns to Sunnydale after learning to control his werewolf instincts. However, he loses control when he suspects Tara and Willow's relationship, and is subsequently caught by the Initiative. Riley spars with Angel when Angel visits Sunnydale; Adam convinces Spike that he will take his chip out if he helps him get Buffy where he wants, Spike agrees and sets out to distance the Scoobies from each other. The Scoobies reveal Adam's plan of releasing an army of hybrid cyborg monsters. A composite being created by a spell, combining the powers and personalities of Buffy, Willow, Xander, and Giles kill Adam after an intense fight. A primordial spirit haunts Buffy, Giles, Willow, and Xander in their individual, cryptic nightmares involving the First Slayer as a result of the magic done in the previous episode.

As Buffy and Dawn help their mother prepare for surgery, an extraterrestrial preys on Sunnydale's mental patients and follows Joyce home. The alien was summoned by Ben to clean up Glory's mess, and Buffy kills it. Buffy learns Riley has been going to a vampire brothel to have his blood sucked for pleasure. She confronts him, and he says he's going away with the military if she doesn't give him a reason to stay. She wants him to stay, but doesn't tell him in time. Emotions between Willow and Anya come to a boil over Xander, and they summon a troll (Olaf). The troll was Anya's ex-boyfriend whom she called vengeance upon. He tries to make Xander choose between the women, but Buffy sends him packing. The Watcher's Council withholds information about Glory from Buffy and make her go through a series of tests. Glory and the Knights of Byzantium target Buffy, and she realizes it's because she has power over them. She orders Quentin to give her the scoop on Glory, and it turns out she's not a demon - she's a god. Dawn discovers that she is the Key, becomes depressed, and runs away. She tells her tale to Ben, who morphs into Glory. Glory, not remembering Ben's thoughts, decides Dawn doesn't know the Key's location, and Willow and Tara teleport Glory elsewhere. After Harmony returns to the scene and attacks Spike for revenge, Drusilla tries to kill Buffy. He saves Buffy from Dru, but has his invitation to the Summers' home revoked. A robot girlfriend, April, is abandoned by her creator, Warren. When April tries to kill Warren's current girlfriend, Buffy intervenes. Spike secretly coerces Warren into making him a robot of Buffy. Buffy and the gang are crushed by the death of Joyce. Dawn goes to the morgue to see the body and is attacked by a vampire. Buffy saves her and watches as Dawn reaches to touch Joyce. Buffy is comforted by Angel following her mother's death, although he can't stay. Dawn attempts to resurrect Joyce with the help of Spike and Doc, but stops part way through the ceremony after Buffy convinces her. The Scoobies discover Spike's new robot toy; Glory's minions kidnap Spike, thinking he is the Key, and when they realize he isn't they torture him for information. Buffy and Giles go on a discovery quest about the origin of the Slayer. Buffy is told ominously that "Death is your gift". Willow and Tara get into an argument, leaving Tara vulnerable to be attacked by Glory, who thinks she is the Key. After discovering her error, Tara's mind is partially sucked out and Willow swears revenge. Glory discovers the real Key, and Buffy and company must flee from her, and the Knights of Byzantium who are trying to destroy the Key. The gang race from Sunnydale in a caravan. Willow tries to reach the Slayer, who has been rendered catatonic by Dawn's abduction. Buffy and the gang set out to rescue Dawn and fight Glory as the ritual commences. Fulfilling her wish, the demon causes everyone at Buffy's birthday party to be unable to leave. Riley returns to town – newly married – and enlists Buffy's help to track down a demon. Her encounter with Riley causes Buffy to end her relationship with Spike. Before Xander and Anya's wedding, Xander's future self suddenly appears, and warns him that his marriage to Anya will be the beginning of a life of disgrace and pain. Xander is shown flashes of the future, convincing him to call it off, but later it is discovered it is only a demon taking revenge on Anyanka from her demon days. Nevertheless, the wedding doesn't go ahead and Anya and Xander break up. Warren, Jonathan, and Andrew unleash a demon whose powers make Buffy believe that her friends are figments of her imagination. Buffy attempts to attack her friends, locks them in her basement and unleashes the same demon on them.

Meanwhile Giles realizes that Buffy was right about Kathy being a demon, and learns that Kathy has stolen parts of Buffy's soul.
