PLOT:
After their business manager steals all of their money, a once wealthy family finds that their only asset, a rural town with a comical name, is their only sanctuary during their troubling times. Forced to abandon the life of leisure and access they'd grown accustomed to, they are reduced to living out of a set of joining motel rooms at a countryside lodge. From there, surrounded by a myriad of eccentric yet down-to-earth townspeople, they have no choice but to adapt to their new home and hopefully reinvent themselves enough to climb back up the social ladder.

season 1 -
Johnny tries to get permission to sell Schitt's Creek; Johnny, Moira, and David have dinner at Roland and Jocelyn Schitt's home; Alexis goes to a truck party to try to find a young man to make out with. Johnny tries to have the obscene town sign removed; Moira has one of her periodic emotional crises after reading nasty things about herself on the internet, and Johnny places Alexis in charge of taking care of Moira until the crisis passes; Moira accepts Jocelyn's invitation to discuss acting with the students at the elementary school; David searches for a job. Worried that they have been bad parents, Johnny and Moira try to get to know David and Alexis better; teamed with Mutt while performing community service as a result of a drunk-driving conviction, Alexis comes to believe that Mutt is having an affair with Jocelyn; with David in need of space in the motel, Stevie helps him try to sell his clothes. Tired of the lack of privacy at the motel, Johnny and Moira borrow Roland's and Jocelyn's cabin for a romantic overnight visit; Alexis talks David into having a game night at the motel while their parents are at the cabin, but invites additional people without his permission and turns the evening into a drunken party. A winery hires Moira as its commercial spokesperson; David suffers a panic attack; David and Alexis attend a partner yoga class with Jocelyn, Mutt, and Twyla. David's inability to kill an insect in his room inspires Stevie to invite him to the town's annual turkey shoot. Jocelyn invites Moira to a day out at a beauty salon. Ted, the veterinarian, asks Alexis out on a date. Moira receives a package from an old friend, which turns out to be a starter kit for a multi-level marketing cosmetics company. She and David arrange a demonstration in her motel room. Johnny tries to apply for unemployment and has trouble finding reliable transportation. Alexis thinks Ted is too nice a person. Johnny is asked to do the eulogy at the funeral of a man he never knew. Two rowdy relatives of the deceased arrive in town, which disgusts David, but they are related to Stevie. Alexis thinks Ted is too kind to animals. Realizing they have no social life, Johnny and Moira get invited to a party hosted by Jocelyn and Roland. Meanwhile, Ted invites his friends, including Alexis, David, Stevie, Mutt and Twyla, to a social gathering. The two parties become a study in contrasts between the two generations of Schitt's Creek residents. Moira's estranged younger sister pays a surprise visit. David agrees to talk to a student in Jocelyn's class about being 'different'. Johnny wants to throw Moira a surprise birthday party, but complications develop when Moira takes over the planning, thinking the party is really a fundraiser. Johnny finds a potential buyer for the town, but Alexis and David have developed an attachment to it.

season 2 -
While the family searches for the missing David, Alexis takes her relationship with Mutt to the next level while still technically engaged to Ted. David has meanwhile imposed himself on the hospitality of some Amish family, who cannot wait to get rid of him. Moira seems more preoccupied by the missing of a favourite heirloom leather handbag than her own son's whereabouts. David helps Moira cook dinner, but never having cooked before, both are flummoxed by simple recipe terms. Johnny looks for an office for his consulting business, and Alexis finally comes clean with Ted about their non-engagement. Moira tries to join the town's a capella group, but is annoyed (and in denial) to find that they are extremely good, and she, a "professional", is by far the weakest singer - a hilarious embarrassment of an audition ensues. Alexis enjoys the heady first days of her new relationship and Johnny attempts to help out at Bob's Garage in return for the free office space. Moira and Johnny try to acquire a memory-foam mattress at an estate sale auction, but end up competing with Roland and his wife for it. Moira is forced to desist when they cannot afford to up the bid. Roland quickly pawns the mattress off to them, after finding it lacks enough bounce for his and his wife's lovemaking. Roland requests David's help with shopping for a blouse for his wife, and the trip ends with David calling the shop 'skanky'. Mutt gifts Alexis with a bicycle, forcing her to admit that she's never learnt to ride one. When asked about business ideas, Johnny uses a bagel shop as an example. Roland and Bob take him seriously, and set in motion a plan to start a business together. Alexis gets sick, and Moira tries to keep her distance. David has difficulty applying for a job at the Blouse Barn, having previously called it 'skanky'. Moira wants to put flowers in front of their hotel room and gets her way. David does not fully understand the idea of tax write-offs and thinks that deducting business purchases from his income means that he gets them for free. Mutt shaves off his beard, which causes tension with Alexis. Johnny is considering running for town council, but backs out once he learns his wife is interested too. Alexis is needy, craving attention she no longer gets since breaking up with Mutt. David and Stevie go out drinking at some deserted dive bar (under the ruse of being each other's "wing-man"), but finding no other option, they end up kissing each other again. After finding out that the raw milk of Bob's that he used in his coffee is expensive, Johnny decides to get into the raw milk business. Alexis says she can get some through her ex-boyfriend Ted, but misremembers 12 pints as 12 "things" and ends up getting much more than they wanted (12 ten-gallon milk churns). They plan to try and sell the milk anyway with Roland's help, but get pulled over by cops who force them to dump the raw milk out because unpasteurised milk is illegal. David helps Moira's opponent, Jocelyn, select a wardrobe, which upsets Moira, who then accuses her son of "stabbing her in the back". David's new car leaves Alexis and Johnny jealous. Alexis is also concerned by Johnny's tab at the local eatery being cut off. He explains this is because of the unemployment cheque getting used on raw milk. Pictures of Moira with OJ Simpson and Robert Blake are located on the internet. Alexis finds employment at Ted's vet clinic. As part of Moira's election campaign, she and Johnny go to the Women's Business Association meeting. Alexis is struggling at her new job at the vet clinic. David offers emotional support to his boss's 14-year-old stepdaughter when she gets her period. Roland, briefly separated from Jocelyn, stays in an adjacent motel room and plays loud music, disturbing Johnny and Moira (however, this relies on a continuity error in which Roland’s room, room 5, is adjacent to room 6 rather than on the other side of the office). Alexis and David look for an apartment. Moira's campaign signs are missing. Wendy encounters problems regarding the Blouse Barn name, so David and Alexis offer legal assistance, ultimately negotiating a deal with a huge clothing retailer for licensing the name so lucratively that Wendy can retire, making up for David having squandered the business's money with his "tax write-offs". While celebrating their anniversary at an elegant restaurant, Johnny and Moira encounter a couple from their previous life, Bev and Don. Jocelyn and Roland show up unexpectedly and join the table. Bev and Don insult the residents and town of Schitt's Creek throughout dinner. When Johnny has had enough of the insults, he tells-off Don and stands up for Schitt's Creek, and most importantly, for his friends, Roland and Jocelyn. Alexis and David enjoy themselves at Mutt's annual party in his barn.

season 3 -
Johnny struggles to get a new business venture off the ground while dealing with unwelcome competition at Bob’s Garage. Moira makes a splash at her first Town Council meeting, but quickly encounters roadblocks from the other councillors. Meanwhile, David and Stevie are shocked to learn that their romantic lives are intersecting. Alexis receives a generous offer from Mutt, but has to deal with Mutt’s new girlfriend. Johnny offers to help out an injured Twyla by waiting tables at the café, but soon gets in over his head. Alexis and Moira make a plan to have lunch, despite the fact that they’re both anxious about spending time alone together. David and Stevie try to figure out the boundaries of their three-way relationship with Jake. Johnny decides to buy a new car, and he and Moira craft an increasingly elaborate ruse to avoid getting gouged by the dealership. David accompanies Stevie as she says goodbye to her great-aunt and confronts her own mortality in the process. Alexis and Ted negotiate the rules of their professional relationship when Ted receives a gift from a female client. As the new owner of the motel, Stevie is in over her head, and Johnny and Moira employ different strategies to discourage Stevie from selling. Meanwhile, Alexis drives a stressed-out David to his driving test, and Alexis finds herself in the unusual position of coaching her older brother. Johnny innocently rents rooms to a local businesswoman looking to meet clients from a nearby conference, but must do damage control when he learns more about the nature of the woman’s business. David helps Moira tape an audition for a horror film, but has trouble keeping his feelings about the script to himself. Alexis convinces Ted that a livestream bunny cam will help advertise the vet clinic. However, the discreet camera ends up advertising more than expected. Johnny and Stevie visit a nearby golf course to pitch a package deal with the motel, but Johnny becomes distracted by his desire to play a round of golf. After agreeing to attend Twyla’s murder mystery party, Moira must help her recruit other guests. Alexis, who reveals that she never graduated high school, entertains a suggestion from Ted to go back to school. When David contemplates starting a new business in town, Moira uses her seat on Town Council to protect her son’s interests. Alexis discovers high school is not as easy as it used to be. Johnny reluctantly offers romantic advice to Ivan, the hapless baker, in return for help with the motel’s continental breakfast. David meets a new friend, Patrick, while setting up his business; Johnny defends Alexis’s schoolwork after he rewrote her paper without her knowledge; and Moira offends a guest at the motel and then gets him to delete a poor review. Moira and Roland find themselves in a compromising situation when she passes out in his bed following a reception they attended. Alexis drives a wedge between David and Patrick. Patrick becomes involved in David's new business and plans to write grants to secure additional funding. David’s photographer ex-boyfriend arrives in town to do a photo series on Moira. Johnny and Roland suspect that Bob is cheating at poker. Alexis contracts head lice from the high school, which spreads into the motel. Moira opposes having a public garden named after her, but agrees when she learns that her husband paid for the honor. Johnny and Moira have trouble trying to find a location for their extremely large family portrait. David launches a soft opening for his new store with Patrick, and the event is a big success. Alexis and Ted kiss when she learns that she has passed her graduation exams, but Ted later backs away when she tries to kiss him again. In the end, the family throws away the formal painting of themselves, with Johnny remarking that it no longer represents who they are. Johnny and Stevie celebrate the motel being fully booked. Alexis decides to quit working at Ted's office to pursue something more suited to her, but they remain friends. When she graduates from high school, her parents agree to her request that they not attend. However, at the end of the ceremony, the Jazzagals are revealed to be giving a special performance, with Moira singing the lead, to Alexis's clear happiness. Ted also attends the graduation. Meanwhile, it's David's birthday, and he goes on an accidental date with Patrick. When Patrick drops David at the motel, they share a kiss, and Patrick reveals that he has never kissed a man before. The show ends with the family sharing a cake in honor of both the graduation and birthday.

season 4 -
Moira fears she killed a motel guest by declining his request for pain medications, but her fears are unjustified. Johnny and Stevie work to have the corpse removed without alarming the other guests of the hotel. David and Patrick make their romance official. Alexis helps Ted find a new office worker for his clinic. After a positive pregnancy test, Johnny braces himself to the possibility of a new baby in the family; however, it is Jocelyn who is pregnant. Alexis is disappointed that Elmdale College is not an ivy-covered, traditional school when she arrives for class; she warms to the idea after learning that much of the experience can be done online. Meanwhile, David and Patrick search for some privacy and accept Stevie's offer to stay at her apartment. Jake, who had proposed a threesome with David and Stevie during Season 3, arrives to pick up Stevie; they have secretly been seeing each other. David and Patrick decide not to discuss David's past sexual history and spend the night together. Moira prepares for her headline debut at the Asbestos Fest, but when she agrees to too large a role, David helps by performing with her. Alexis alerts Patrick and David that loitering teens have been stealing from the apothecary. Roland is hired to help at the hotel because he needs extra money to pay for the arrival of the baby. Alexis and Twyla go out for a girls' night. Alexis turns down the chance to talk to a man who has been watching her from across the bar all night. Alexis instead walks past him into the parking lot, where she calls Ted, but hangs up when his answering machine comes on. Moira, who had come as their driver, tells Alexis a story about knowing immediately that she and Johnny were meant to be together, even though Johnny was with someone else when they first met. David agrees to try to compromise with Patrick over store decisions, but ends up not being able to. While referring to his own good taste, he refers to Patrick as his boyfriend, and they begin kissing. When a rumour appears online that Moira died, she relishes the positive comments about her life. Roland asks Johnny to be the godfather of his child, but it turns out that Roland had been asking several other people too. David takes Alexis with him to discuss an exclusivity deal with a local cheese producer for his store. The cheese maker is Ted's current girlfriend, and the four have an awkward lunch without disclosing that Ted and Alexis had been a couple. On the ride home, Alexis admits to David that she is still in love with Ted. David and Patrick throw an open mic to promote their shop; David gets nervous when Patrick states he will be performing, but Patrick is a talented singer and sings a romantic song to David. Alexis develops a promotional strategy for the motel, but Stevie fears that too much success will lead to the Roses leaving her alone. The Roses surprise Stevie with a portmanteau of their names, Rosebud, for the rebranded motel. Moira inadvertently learns the gender of the Schitts' new baby, but a family tradition requires it to be kept secret. In the end, the Schitts decide to have their doctor tell them they are having a boy. When Patrick sends David a cookie cake announcing their four months together as a joke, the Roses decide to hold a party to celebrate David's longest relationship ever. Alexis gets an errant text from Ted and visits him in hopes that the text was actually sent specifically to prompt a reply. Ted, however, reveals that the text was simply sent to Alexis by accident. Upon her return to the motel, Alexis invites a woman, Rachel, to join the family cookout. Rachel, who had just revealed being sad about failing to rekindle a former relationship, arrives to find Patrick, her former fiancé. Patrick apologizes to David about the news, but David says he would like some time to consider everything. After he has been locking himself in his room for several hours, the rest of the family is concerned. Alexis's phone, which was left in the room, displays a text from Ted saying that he was glad to have seen her earlier. After the barbecue fiasco, Stevie takes David to a spa for some consoling, but she bought a honeymoon package, making things worse. During a late night conversation, David and Stevie both reveal that the other is their first best friend. Johnny impresses the Jazzagals with his talents, but Moira does not like his joining the group because she counts the group as one of her few social pleasures. Alexis tries out a dating app and dates a cute local, who is the other veterinarian in town; after revealing to him her past with Ted, he leaves the date. Patrick has been sending gifts to David, causing David to put off reconciling with him. When David is finally ready to approach Patrick, his selfish delays are revealed, causing Patrick to claim an entitlement to the same sort of olive branches. Alexis starts a marketing company for herself and wants to propose a singles' night to the town. Moira shuts down the idea to Alexis, but ends up accidentally pitching it to the town council and they accept it enthusiastically. Johnny tries to show his appreciation for Stevie with a gift of make-up, which offends her. The gesture had been well-intentioned, and they agree to simply tell each other of their appreciation. In the closing scene, Patrick returns to the store and suggests that David treat him to dinner as part of his compensation. Instead, David sits Patrick in a chair and then lip syncs Tina Turner's "Simply the Best" while gyrating around the store, to Patrick's joy. For research, Johnny and Moira attend a singles event. Alexis runs into an old friend, Klair, who is passing through town with a group of young women on a tour of random places. Klair offers Alexis a job and tells her to join them at the town bar later. Alexis meets the group at the bar, where Klair does not focus on the job offer and dismisses her supposed friend behind her back. Alexis, unimpressed by the behavior of her former colleagues, declines the job offer and leaves. David agrees to help Jocelyn in planning her baby shower. Alexis reconnects with Mutt when he returns for the birth of his brother, and he volunteers the use of his barn as location for a singles week event. When Mutt tells her that he broke up with his girlfriend but still thinks candor is important, she rebuffs his romantic overtures and leaves. Instead, she goes to Ted's clinic and tells him she still loves him before exiting, leaving him speechless. Moira initially tries to avoid jury duty, but she then wants to serve when the case reminds her of own experiences; the judge learns of the bias and dismisses her. When David and Stevie both develop rashes, a moisturizer from David's store is the suspected cause; it is later found to have been caused by poison oak that Johnny used in arrangements in the hotel. As Singles Week gets underway, Jocelyn goes into labor, but Roland is out of contact and running errands for the hotel; Moira accompanies Jocelyn to the hospital. Patrick tells David that he loves him for the first time. While David is dropping a box off at Ted's clinic, Ted reveals that he broke up with his girlfriend after Alexis told him she was still in love with him. David returns to the store, kisses Patrick, and tells him that he loves him too. An event for Singles Week is a success, due to Alexis's solution. Moira takes over the event, so that Alexis can take part in a matchmaking game, and Ted arrives just in time to partner with Alexis and kiss her. At the hospital, the Schitts tell Moira and Johnny that their son's middle name is Moira in her honor. It's Christmas Eve and Johnny wants to celebrate with an old-fashioned Rose Christmas party, but the rest of the family has trouble getting into the holiday spirit.

season 5 -
While Moira is in Bosnia filming the Crows movie that she hopes will revive her acting career, Johnny begins spending a lot of time working at the motel to compensate for his missing her. David attempts to reinvigorate his relationship to going to a ropes course outing with Alexis and Ted. Moira convinces the director of the movie that it is not necessarily a disaster in the making if he commits to it. A sleep-deprived Moira worries about a stack of old love letters addressed to Johnny from another woman, but Johnny reminds her that Moira herself had sent the letters to him. David and Stevie are held up at David's store. Alexis trades some of her jewelry to Twyla in return for a locket she had regifted from Ted. Alexis and Johnny plan for Stevie to act as a guest to impress a reviewer, but Stevie and the reviewer hit it off personally and she reveals the scheme to him. David and Patrick search for a new apartment. David misunderstands and thinks Patrick is suggesting that they get an apartment together, when he only meant to invite David along to look at apartments Patrick was looking to rent himself. Johnny finds himself under financial pressure with the arrival of Moira's high-priced red carpet gown for the Crows movie premiere, and she ends up returning it. Alexis finds out that Ted's current assistant had had a one-night stand with him before Alexis and Ted resumed dating. David is conned into taking a road trip with Stevie, who meets up with Emir, the hotel reviewer, again. David and Patrick throw a housewarming party and Ted finally lets loose, while Johnny and Moira try their best to babysit Roland Jr. for the evening. Moira and the Jazzagals take Jocelyn out for a night at the casino. Johnny walks in on Stevie while she is taking a topless photo to send to Emir, and their exchanges are awkward until clearing the air. David encourages Patrick to go on a date with a customer who had given Patrick his number so Patrick would have experiences with a man other than David. David realizes he made a mistake, but Patrick arrives and announces that he was unable to go through with the date and is interested only in David. Johnny incorrectly suspects that Ted’s mom is attracted to him, while Moira cannot resist getting involved in a local musical production. David benefits from a potential supplier's mistaken belief that Roland Jr. is David's baby while inspecting the store. Johnny and Stevie attend the regional hospitality awards, while Moira does everything in her power to stop Alexis from auditioning for Cabaret. Stevie is rejected by Emir for a long weekend together and is very upset. Johnny takes her home instead of staying for the after-party. Moira offers Stevie the lead in "Cabaret". David agrees to sub in for the annual baseball game and ends up winning the game for his team. Stevie does not enjoy being in the show, but Moira talks to her and raises her confidence. Johnny accidentally hits a cat and is pressured to break the news to the adult daughter of the owners. David has a run-in with an old colleague, who has a business very similar to Rose Apothecary and is found to be selling counterfeit goods. Alexis is left in charge of David's store and ends up having sex with Ted there. While in town for the surprise party, Patrick's parents get a surprise of their own when Johnny reveals Patrick is gay to them. David is forced to tell Patrick of the disclosure, and he decides to come out to his parents at the birthday party that night. Everyone agrees to allow Patrick to tell his parents himself, and when he does, they both immediately reassure Patrick of their love for him. Moira gets coaxed into going to a soap opera convention with Alexis, where she runs into a soap actress colleague who tells her that she should embrace the easy money of the convention circuit and accept things. Ted suggests a trip with Alexis, but they have very different ideas of the ideal vacation destination. In truth, Ted was accepted into a very selective vet program that lasts six months in the Galápagos Islands, and he says that he will decline the chance. After Alexis realizes that she has not been as giving to Ted as he has to her, she tells him that she will go along. Johnny fills in for Moira at the annual Mayor’s Roast, as David distracts Moira from finding out that Stevie and Patrick have been taking private dance lessons. Patrick and David go on a romantic hike, but argue when David complains constantly. After Patrick injures his foot, they decide to continue anyway. At the spot planned for a picnic, Patrick proposes, and David accepts. Everyone panics over Johnny's health scare, but it turns out not to have been a serious issue after all. It's opening night for "Cabaret" and Stevie is nowhere to be found. David tries to make a big announcement, but keeps getting overshadowed by the musical.

season 6 -
Alexis is leaving in a few hours to meet up with Ted, or so she thinks, but has transposed the day and month on her airline reservation, resulting in her reservation not being for another month. Meanwhile, David and Patrick find the perfect wedding venue, and learn that Sundays are heavily discounted, making it affordable, and the venue has had a cancellation for an upcoming Sunday. They then learn that the adjacent pig farm butchers pigs with a great deal of noise and smell on Sundays (the reason for the discount) and realize they must keep looking for a suitable venue. Moira has taken over the Instagram feed of the streaming service that's releasing her Crows movie for a day. David's excitement over the wedding plans causes him to wet the bed and he is profoundly humiliated. As Moira and Patrick discuss the bed-wetting incident with sweet and loving understanding, Moira has left a livestream going on her phone, allowing thousands of followers of the Instagram account to hear the conversation. Stevie and David attend a class/interview to be flight attendants. David is eliminated quickly, and Stevie receives a job offer. Johnny's loan application to purchase a second motel is rejected, as he cannot use the Rosebud as collateral, since only Stevie is listed as the owner. Roland and Jocelyn take out a second mortgage and purchase the second motel, making Johnny, reluctantly, full business partners with them. Alexis has a romantic video conference date with Ted, which Twyla helped set up. Alexis attempts to convince Stevie to give up her maid of honour role, while David and Patrick try on wedding clothes. Moira shares the newly released Crows movie trailer with the Jazzagals. Johnny and Roland find a suspicious bag of money at the new motel. Alexis plans a local premiere for the Crows movie and Moira makes a big splash on the red carpet, while David tends to Patrick after his wisdom teeth removal. Stevie asks to be a partner again in the motel business, to Johnny's relief, as he was feeling overwhelmed without her (and Roland tends to be worse than no help at all). A video of the red carpet bird attack fiasco went viral, causing Alexis and Moira claim that it was a promotional stunt. Johnny, Roland, and Ronnie take Bob out to a bar to help him begin dating. David and Patrick order a coffee table, which is delivered by Jake, David and Stevie's ex-lover. Jake invites David and Patrick over to his house; they are nervous that he wants a threesome but are surprised when Stevie is already there. Alexis and Ted are having trouble communicating while Ted is in the Galápagos, and Ted tells Alexis that she should pursue her career instead of coming to be with him. A local vineyard wants to introduce a wine called Moira Rosé. Moira and David taste samples to pick one and find them all repulsive, but get extremely drunk anyway. At Roland's urging, Johnny has "the talk" with Patrick, which Patrick leads, to Johnny's relief. Johnny and Moira compete with Roland and Jocelyn for a night in the presidential suite in the new motel, Alexis is faced with an extremely difficult decision when Ted makes a surprise visit, and David convinces Patrick to get a spray tan for their pre-wedding photo. Alexis rebounds by dating an older man, to Johnny's dismay. Moira insults the town in an interview with People magazine, so she tries to make amends by making a video advertising the town as a vacation spot, but that's fairly lukewarm too. The producer of Moira's former soap, Sunrise Bay, proposes a prime-time reboot. Alexis binge-watches the soap and researches its internal politics and ends up giving Moira sound advice. Meanwhile, Johnny, Stevie and Roland run into an issue with the new motel that has them rethinking their investment. The Roses attend the "escape room" portion of David and Patrick's bachelor party, but their participation wanes the more their personal dilemmas come to a head. Johnny, Stevie, and Roland head to New York for their pitch meeting, and the family anxiously awaits their return. Moira receives some unexpected news and David makes a tough decision about where he wants to live. David stresses out over the rain on his wedding day, but his family makes it right.
